The Vampire Diaries has been on a roll lately with their episode titles. This week, "A View to a Kill" calls to mind the James Bond film of the same name, and the famous Duran Duran theme song it inspired. Like most Bond films, this one had a complicated plot that was hard to follow, but interesting to watch. I won't go into too many details, but imagine a bunch of running around, back-stabbing, and explosive death in the finale and you'd get the gist. In fact, it's pretty similar to this episode. (Minus an 1980's dance, and vampires...)
Meeting you with a view to a kill
Face to faces, secret places, feel the chill
Stefan wakes up the morning after, and wonders how he could have slept with Rebekah. Instead of dealing with an awkward morning after convo, Stefan tries to sneak out of her room, but is caught by Klaus. Oops, busted! Klaus wants Bex's dagger so he can put down Kol, remove Damon's compulsion, and keep Jeremy safe. She isn't interested. Since Kol has stolen the other daggers, Rebekah's is the only one left, and she isn't taken any chances. After she storms off, Klaus tries to get Stefan's help in retrieving the dagger by reminding him a human Elena and her Golden Vag await him. Sold!
Night fall covers me
But you know the plans I'm making
Still overseas,
Could it be the whole lot opening wide
A sacred why
A mystery gaping inside
A week is why
Elena puts her plan to kill Kol in motion. She'll call him up to discuss a true while Stefan daggers Rebekah, Bonnie will take out Klaus, and Jeremy will kill Kol. Once the Originals are off their backs, they'll hunt down the cure, become human, and use it against the ancient vampires to ensure their safety. Sounds like a good plan, but since when has a plan of Elena's gone well? Actually.... now.
Elena and Jeremy were successful at killing Kol, Klaus was detained by Bonnie, and Rebekah ended up joining the Scooby Gang. Now that wiping out Kol's line completed Jeremy's mark, they can all go find the cure and live happily ever after. But it's doubtful. There are some complications.
Until we dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
To fatal sounds of broken dreams
Dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
Earlier that day, Stefan tries to manipulate the dagger away from Rebekah by escorting her to the Decade Dance. Here's the hitch: Bonnie's dad had cancelled it. Despite this glaring fact it doesn't stop the vampire duo from breaking into the school, and putting on their own dance. It's already decorated, and Bex went through all that rouble looking for an outfit. The two groove to hits by Bon Jovi, and the Cure to name a few. The danced. The reminisced about the decade of excess which Rebekah missed out on due to lying in a box with a dagger in her chest. Once Stefan learned Bex had the dagger hidden in her leg warmers, he even tried to teach her The Breakfast Club slide. By that time Matt had arrived, and was prepared to help Stefan take her down, but it was Bex's confession that she wants to be human again more than anything that prevented Stefan from double-crossing her.
The choice for you is the view to a kill
Between the shades assassination standing still
While everyone was trying to take out the Originals, Damon was bonding with one. Since Klaus had put Stefan on dagger duty, he opted to babysit Damon. The two talked about all sorts of things, but the best part of their conversation was when Klaus asked Damon how Elena could have possibly forgiven him for all the bad things he has done to her, and fall in love with him. Everyone else doubts Elena's feelings, and chuck them up to the dreaded sire bond. Klaus being a hybrid knows all about sire bonds, and can recognize that what Elena feels for Damon isn't just about the bond. There's something more.
Of course since Damon has a history of being a villain, Klaus assumes Damon must be compelling her, or manipulating her in some way. Why else would she be his girlfriend? But this isn't something he wants to know about them for the sake of gossip. Damon recognizes Klaus' transparent questions for what they are. A way for him to win Caroline now that she has most likely figured out that Klaus is responsible for Carol Lockwood's death. The bonding doesn't last long, however, once Kol calls his big brother to inform him about Elena's plot to kill him, Klaus assumes Damon was a distraction. Why else would anyone want to spend time with him?
First crystal tears,
Fallen of snowflakes on your body
First time in years
To drench you skin of lover's rosy stain
A chance to find the phoenix for the flame
A chance to die
All the pieces are in place to take down Kol except Bonnie. Shane has convinced her father that she's out of control, and he's decided now is the time to hold a family meeting. Complete with her vampire mother Abby. The two set out to get Bonnie in hand so they can free her from black magic, but Bonnie proves too powerful. She's addicted, and doesn't think twice about harming her mother in order to run to Elena's aid.
But can we dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
To fatal sounds of broken dreams
Dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
By the end of the night, Kol is dead. Rebekah is saddened by the news of her brother's "final" death, but is still willing to remain Stefan's partner. Klaus, on the other hand, isn't so forgiving. He reveals to Elena and Jeremy that he doesn't really care about creating more hybrids. He only wanted to cure so it couldn't be used against him, and has no qualms about killing either Elena or Jeremy. Before he can carry out his threat, Bonnie arrives, and seals him inside the Gilbert living room.
Since the Gilberts can't remain in their home, they head (with Bonnie) to the Salvatores to await the completion of Jeremy's Hunter's Mark. Damon's compulsion is gone, and he's reunite with Elena, but before they can truly enjoy each other, Stefan returns home with Silas' tombstone. Rebekah didn't give him the dagger, but gave him the stone as a sign of good faith that their partnership is still intact. While they all catch up, Jeremy's tattoo gets completed (and visible.)
Thoughts:
I thought the episode was super fast, but was reminded by my friend @AwkwardMegs that the episode wasn't fast. It was just at season 1 speed, and this season has been slow by comparison. After watching the episode a second time I realized she was right. A lot happened in the episode, some of which I though could have taken place last week, but I'm glad we can now go get this dreadful cure. Though I am sad to see him go, Kol's time was up since he's never really been used. However, I am curious what the new Originals spin-off will look like now they're down one more family member. This surprisingly peaks my curiosity in the new show even more.
My favorite parts of this week's episode were Damon and Klaus' conversation, Stebekah, and Dark Bonnie. I've been interested in seeing more Damon and Klaus since last season when the two bickered over drinks at Gloria's Bar in Chicago. The dynamic between both older brothers fascinates me. Both men seem to have a begrudging respect and loathing for one another, but also a bit of a homoerotic attraction. You never know if they'll try to rip hearts or pants. Stefan and Rebekah are the same. They have a tentative alliance, and a complicated past. Each scene they're in together is electric, and I'm glad Stefan is getting laid by someone who's not Elena. Way to go, Stef! I also was happy that Bex wasn't fooled by Stefan's sweet gesture, and saw through his manipulations. She's been used enough. As for Dark Bonnie, it's about damn time she got a story. Yeah, she was still being used as a band-aid on a problem, but this time she was a part of the team, not just the clean-up crew.

What I disliked about the episode was how preposterous it was that a newbie vamp and hunter could so easily take out an original. Seriously?!? Not only did this fool carry the method to his destruction in his coat pocket where it could easily be stolen, but he left an impaled Elena alive. Um... didn't Kol just tell Klaus he was going to kill her? Though Kol only popped in from time to time, and wasn't a very fleshed out character, I was still sad to see him go for the fact he was the only one trying to stop this crazy plan to awaken Silas. Yeah, Damon has long maintained he thought Shane was a liar, and this whole thing was a trap, but despite his feelings he still is on The Team. It was nice to have a voice of dissent, and have the reason sound reasonably sane. Even if he's quoting Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Silas arisen=apocalypse. Oh, well, he's dead now so...
Next week the Scoobies head "Into the Woods." There will be bickering, two-timing, and crazy forest people. Good times!
