The Vampire Diaries (4x16) Recap - "Bring it On"

You may remember the 2000 film Bring it On starring Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku, or maybe you don't. The episode was basically about two rival cheerleading teams fighting to compete at the National Cheerleading Championships, and bringing home the trophy. Kirsten played the captain of the Rancho Verde Torros who had taken over the team as captain her senior year, not knowing all of their cheer routines were stolen. Gabrielle Union played the captain of the East Compton Clovers. The very team the previous Torro captain, Big Red, stole routines from. While the Torros were from a wealthy school district, the Clovers were from an impoverished one. This Cinderella story was about how one team beat the odds to win, and the other learned a valuable lesson in teamwork. Tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries was not that.

Caroline is the captain of the Mystic Falls Timberwolves cheerleading team, but her battle was with a fellow cheerleader, not a rival team. Since all of the "food" in town is tainted with vervain thanks to Mayor Hopkins, Elena figured out she's solve all of her problems (the Salvatores, boredom, and hunger) by joining the cheerleading team just in time for a major competition. This one act made everyone believe she was moving on, and allowed Elena the opportunity to feed on out of towners. Gone is the girl who cries and gets kidnapped, and in her place is a manipulative, blunt, ballsy, and badass bitch. No Emotion Elena (NEE) is the vampire I hoped for when Elena first turned. She's enjoying life, having fun, and doesn't put up with crap from anyone. Unfortunately, this Elena is quickly turning off her friends. Well, maybe not Damon.

After a day listening to Stefan and Caroline extol the virtue of restraint, Elena finally snapped. She blatantly called Stefan out for being condescending, and let him know that even though she is still sexually attracted to him, she finds his "running after her, cleaning up her messes," pathetic. Not only that, but she thinks it's time he gets laid, and not by her, because she just doesn't care about him anymore. While Elena said some pretty cruel things to Stefan, it was Caroline that she was truly horrible to.

Besides dropping Caroline during a cheerleading flip, Elena also tried to hurt Liz and nearly staked Caroline in a fight. Turns out Elena is still holding a grudge about Caroline telling Stefan that she slept with Damon, as well as dating Matt. Though she didn't say that exactly, her digs about Caroline and Stefan dancing together at the part she threw belied a little jealousy at the possibility that Caroline may end up hooking up with another of her exes.
When the boys weren't babysitting Elena, they were trying to investigate The Mystery of the Stolen Blood Bags. Someone in town had stolen all of the blood supply of the local hospital, and even those of the neighboring towns. While at first the boys believed it was Elena's doing, the newbie vamp quickly told Stefan, "I prefer my blood a little warmer." By the end of the episode, the boys concluded the culprit must be Silas.

The only person in town not giving a damn about either Elena, or stolen blood was Klaus. The hybrid is still a little put-out about the Scoobys killing his brother and magically imprisoning him in the Gilbert living room. Instead, Klaus spent his time trying to track down Katherine and the ever elusive cure before she can 'ram it down his throat.' All of his investigation hasn't given him any information on Katerina as of yet, but he did manage to get a little booty by the way of Hayley. I guess charm, dinner, and mediocre paintings are the way into a girl's panties heart.

"Bring it On" was a fun episode in every way. Not only did we finally get a Klaus sex scene (and a hot one at that), but we finally got another glimpse at the fun Elena promised back in season one's "Bloodlines." After Elena turned off the humanity switch, I thought that would mean the end of Delena and the sire bond. I was only partly wrong. Delena is still a go, but the dreaded sire bond is officially kaput. I'm not too sure how a relationship without feelings will work when one of the parties is still in love with the other, but like Damon, I'll take it.

Tyler may not be coming back to town, but at least the guy is still looking out for his best friend Matt. Matt has been in need of financial assistance, and Tyler decides to leave him Lockwood Manor, and I hope some greenbacks as well, because it's doubtful Matt can afford to keep the utilities on with only his check from the Mystic Grill. We still don't know where Katherine or Silas are, but all of the Stefan/Caroline scenes made up for it. I've been shipping these two since season 2, and would love to see that go somewhere.

Now that Damon has decided to stop bossing Elena around, and just enjoy the ride, the two are headed to New York City. We've already seen how easy it is for Ms. Gilbert to manipulate the Salvatores, which has me wondering whose idea that really was. If it's Damon's, then the two will party like it's 1999, and eat their fill. However, if Elena did manipulate him like I suspect, I'm sure partying the night away isn't the only thing on the agenda. After tonight's episode, I can't wait to see how this all develops as we are on our way to finishing off the season.
