The Vampire Diaries Episode (4x07) Recap - "My Brother's Keeper"

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...
  • Elena dealt with a horrible murder hangover.
  • Stefan discovered he isn't Batman.
  • Caroline made a deal with the devil.
  • Matt began his new career as the local Mystic Falls P.I.
  • Prof. Shane showed he can always be even more creepy.
  • Jeremy added to his tattoo.
  • Hybrids are friends, too.
  • Stefan and Elena broke up for the millionth time.
What we learned:
  • Katherine is awesome no matter what form she takes.
  • Vampires hate to swim.

It's that time of year again. Time for the Miss Mystic Falls dance, and though we don't flash back to season 1's, the echoes reverberate through the entire episode. Now that Stefan and Elena are done (for now) the two try to move forward with their lives. Stefan works on a plan to "cure" Elena of her vampirism so he can get his girlfriend back, while Elena grapples with her increased feelings towards Damon. The man in the middle of all this, Damon, has no clue what has transpired until his baby bro blames him for the entire thing.

The entire episode we watch as Stefan carries out his plan to complete Jeremy's hunter's map. He begins by killing a prisoner at the hospital, turning him into a vampire, and forcing Jeremy to kill him. What Stefan didn't count on was the more the newbie hunter kills, the more of his humanity he loses. This is something Stefan learns after Jeremy almost murders his sister. The very person Stefan hopes to "save."

While Stefan is pulling International Man of Mystery and Intrigue duty, Damon and Elena metaphorically dance around each other at the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant. Elena gathers her courage to confess to Damon that her feelings for him are the reason she broke up with his brother, and surprisingly Damon shows restraint from grabbing her then and there. From her walking down the Lockwood staircase towards him, to them eye-sexing it up at the dance, it's hard not to think back to the initial sparks the two ignited at the first dance.

Damon and Elena aren't the only new couples at the dance. Caroline gave into Klaus by allowing him to be her escort per their previous agreement when he allowed Jeremy to murder one of his hybrids to save Elena. The date began awkwardly, but once Caroline saw how seriously Klaus is taking this date by showing up drop-dead gorgeous, she softens up to him, and the two actually begin to have a good time. Their scenes were so cute, and endearing that I almost forgot all the horrible things Klaus has done. One person who didn't forget was Tyler, who had to look at them from afar.

Tyler was there with his wolf pal Hayley, who is thrilled to be Tyler's date. Unlike Caroline and Klaus, though, the two rarely spent time together at the event. For the majority of the time, Hayley chatted up Prof. Shane, because that's not suspect at all. The entire time I couldn't help think about how Mason and Katherine showed up in MF at the same time, and were undercover lovers. Been there. Done that. Wish I was shocked that Hayley is using Tyler to break the sire bonds of Klaus' hybrids just to hand them over to Silas Prof. Shane, but I'm not. His ingredient list is also reminiscent of Katherine's from season 2.

The biggest thing to come out of tonight's episode was Elena being sire bound to Damon. Now that the two have finally hooked up this is a new complication to any possible relationship between them. If Damon learns of this aspect of their relationship, will he tell Elena? And if he does, will she still want to be with him? I hope he is honest with her. Still... if she decides to keep seeing him, she'll have to trust that he won't use their bond to take advantage of her. Where Stefan was safe, Damon could prove to be more dangerous than Elena has ever thought possible.

Things I loved:

  • Crazy Stefan! (More please!)
  • Psycho Hunter Jeremy (That's what we call bad-ass, Jer.)
  • Hot Delena sex (More of that also!)
  • Musical roommates. I've been saying for years Matt needed to move in with one of his friends. Can't believe all it took was Elena dying, and Jeremy becoming a hunter.
  • Klaroline, Klaroline, & Klaroine.
Next week the Salvatores road trip to New Orleans, and we'll flashback to WWII. Elena, Bonnie, and Caroline have a slumber party. Shocking news and confessions to be had by all. At least "We'll Always Have Bourbon Street."

"You're a monster, Elena. You deserve to die.": The Vampire Diaries Episode (4x06) Review - "We All Go A Little Mad Sometimes"

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...
  • Connor turned the Mystic Grill into the OK Corral.
  • Stefan played everyone dirty for a good cause.
  • Elena climbed on Damon like he was a stallion.
  • Matt moonlighted as MacGuyver.
  • April's noggin is made of swiss cheese.
  • Vampire Elena finally acting like the bad-ass vamp she's supposed to be.
  • Caroline showed her claws to Tyler and Hayley.
  • Klaus dug for buried treasure.
  • Jeremy is the new hunter in town.
Last week, Elena killed Connor. What she (and everyone who isn't Klaus) didn't realize was that doing so would make her go insane. The gang spent the entire episode trying to save Elena, of course, and I'm not sure everyone is happy with the results.

In order to save Elena, Jeremy had to behead one of Tyler's friends, thus activating his hunter's mark. I love that Steven R. McQueen finally has something decent to play on the show, and can't wait to see both him and Kat Graham take on larger roles this season in the central storyline. What stood out the most about Jeremy's arc wasn't the funny line about being willing to stake Damon if handed a stake, but Caroline's reaction to Chris' death.

For the longest time I've noticed how the Scoobies don't seem all that affected by the deaths of non-Scoobies. Caroline felt Chris' death was justified because it allowed Jeremy to save Elena from madness. What was sad about this thought was how Caroline said it to Tyler. Someone who was actually mourning the death of his friend. Not saintly Elena, but Chris the hybrid. I loved how the writers had Tyler point this fact out to Caroline in the "He's not a friend."/"He's my friend." exchange between the couple. Not everything revolves around Elena. At least it shouldn't.

Tyler wasn't just unhappy about the death of his friend, but also unhappy at the prospect of his girlfriend dating Klaus. Chris was Klaus' hybrid, and he voluntarily sacrificed him in exchange for 2 things: potential blood bag Elena, and brand new hunter Jeremy. I understand Caroline's thinking. She and Tyler are pretending to be broken up, so this date will just add to their fabrication. However, from Tyler's standpoint he's losing yet another thing to Klaus.

Bonnie has seemed pretty starstruck where professor Shane is concerned, but this week her eyebrows seemed a little raised. Now that she's had unsupervised access to Shane's files, she's noticed this guy is way too informed about the supernatural. When he gave his little speech about Silas and the Ultimate Power, I know I'm not the only one thinking that Shane=Silas, and he's the Big Evil. Something tells me the map doesn't lead to a cure, but is really a road map for Silas to regain his powers. I hope I've read Bonnie right, cause homegirl better watch out! If I didn't, the Magnificent Matt Donovan sure as hell did.

The biggest change came with the dreaded triangle. Stefan did his best to save Elena from herself, but with them on the outs he was unsuccessful. Of course she was hallucinating tons, but I believe there was some transference going on. In the end, Stefan had Damon go after her, which did indeed end up saving Elena's life.

What I loved about this storyline was how mature everyone was. Finally! Stefan didn't sit around beating himself for past wrongs, or crying because his girl isn't really his girl anymore. He's noticed Elena and Damon growing closer. He's noticed that Damon seems to be the only one right now that Elena wants to be around, and will listen to. These things in combination with his confession last week that Vampire Elena isn't the girl he fell in love with helped Stefan make up his mind that the couple needed to call it quits. I've heard some fans didn't like it that Stefan was the one to break-up, but I appreciate that Stefan has enough self-respect to say enough is enough. He deserves better than sharing his lover's affections with his big brother. Way to go, Stef!

As I said, Stefan wasn't the only one being mature this week. Both Damon and Elena showed growth as well. When Damon was in a situation where he could have taken advantage, he pulled back. As far as Damon is concerned, Elena made her choice, and it wasn't him. Finally he's put his foot down, and is refusing to take sloppy seconds. Like Stefan, Damon deserves a woman who feels he is her first choice.  As for Elena, she finally put on her big girl panties, and admitted her true feelings. No matter how painful, she was honest with Stefan, and didn't use emotional blackmail to appear to be the victim. She finally owned up to her feelings.

Despite Elena and Stefan breaking up, despite Elena telling Stefan that she has strong feelings for Damon, I still don't see a happy future for Damon and Elena. At least not now. Maybe not ever. Damon loves Elena, he does, but he loves his baby brother more. I think the guilt over truly getting what he wants at the prospect of losing his brother will be too much, and even if Elena wants to take the next step, I believe ultimately Damon will choose Stefan. Especially since he only seems to be "the one" now she is a vampire. What happens if they are successful in turning her back human? The fear of being cast aside will most likely be enough to make Damon put on the brakes.

Everyone is on a new path, and the way looks dark, and dangerous. Outside forces are trying to break the Scoobies apart, but if they remember the simple fact that they are stronger together than apart, I think they can find their way into the light.

The Vampire Diaries "Killer" Review - "You say it's complicated, but it's not."

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...
  • Klaus and Rebekah told Stefan some family bedtime stories.
  • Elena learned to "Snatch, Feed, Erase."
  • Bonnie got hot for teacher.
  • Damon & Elena got high, and dirty danced like it was 1999.
  • Jeremy sketched a naked Connor's tattoo.
  • Connor and the Professor are in cahoots.
  • The Cure for Vampirism is the new Moonstone.
This week's episode was better than last week's, but that's to be expected. Last week was meant to set up next next several episode, and thus was filled with exposition. Much of which didn't make sense since we don't have all the facts. The Cure for Vampirism seems lame now, as did the Moonstone back in S2, but then we got a fabulous twist. As always, I'm sure the writers will have something just as awesome for us this season.

One of the wonderful things about season 4 has been watching all the characters get screen time, some development, and forging alliances we haven't really seen before. It's one of the things that make this season seem refreshing, and much like a reboot.

"I apologize. Am I intruding?"
It's been a while since we've seen a jealous Caroline, and though I found it annoying, it was nice to see her be more well-rounded than she's been in a while. I love Caroline, but sometimes she just seems a little too perfect. The Caroline we saw this week was very much season 1 Caroline. The one I hated, but enjoyed getting a bit of a reminder.

Just because I found Caroline annoying, doesn't mean I don't get where she's coming from. I, too, would have been pissed if a hottie was living at my boyfriend's. A hottie I had never heard of before, and who seemed a little too close to him for comfort. When the reveal came that Tyler hadn't been unfaithful I was happy. I love the idea of him and Hayley running an Underground Railroad for hybrids. I just hope the newly free hybrids are more powerful then the ones currently tethered to Klaus. Because let's be honest, this hybrid storyline has kind of been a bust.
"Anybody gets in my way, they're dead."
I love Connor. It's a shame he had to die so early, but I also get why from a storytelling standpoint. Since Jeremy first learned he could see Connor's magical tattoo it was evident that Jeremy would/could wind up being the season's big bad. Or at least a serious complication. Now that Connor has gone to Slayer heaven, Jeremy is a member of the illustrious Five. Once Klaus discovers this fact, there won't be anything he won't do to use Jeremy for his purpose. Here's the flip side: What if Stefan and Jeremy climb aboard?
"If you're going to be like me you need to understand: vampires kill humans. Hunters kill vampires."
Of course both guys would do anything to save Elena from being vampire. Jeremy would do it solely to get his last surviving family member back the was she was, and to help alleviate all the guilt she will have from her first kill as a vampire.  Stefan will do it so he can get the girl he loves back. Though both men will have honorable intentions, I do believe this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back in the Stefan and Elena relationship. Despite Stefan being unable to deny Elena's attraction to his brother, it will be Elena's disappointment at learning her lover doesn't accept her unconditionally that will undoubtedly tear them apart.

In this episode we were reminded of what lengths Elena would go through to protect the people she loves. What the guys seem to have forgotten. I predict that Elena will not be happy with the idea of Jeremy killing vampires just so he can complete a treasure map on his body for Klaus to read. I believe Elena will be willing to sacrifice her own chance of regaining her mortality to ensure Jeremy never has to go through the guilt she feels from having killed Connor.
"No cell phones,or Internet during witch therapy."
While the Scoobies took on Connor, Bonnie was being distracted by Professor Shane. Right now she sees him as the man who took over her Grams teaching position, and has the answers of why her magic is gone. What she doesn't know is the professor has a plan, and Bonnie is just one of the pieces on his chessboard. What part she has to play, and what his overall plan is is still a mystery for now, but now that Connor is gone I'm sure we'll find out more.

Though I found it alarming that Bonnie drank strange tea that "is better when it's smoked" from this guy she just met, and didn't bolt when she discovered he had removed a piece of her clothing without her knowing, I am hopeful that this will all lead to Bonnie taking a walk on the dark side. Klaus said that there should be 4 more of the Five walking about, but I wonder if Jeremy could be the only one left, and the professor wants to use Bonnie to recreate the original spell to create more. Something tells me if this is so, he may volunteer as a candidate.
"No, Damon, I didn't tell him I got high like a crackhead, and dirty danced with you."
Stefan has been acting cagey ever since his deal with Klaus, and Damon believes it has to do with him and Elena getting freaky at the frat party the night before. When Elena confesses she never told Stefan about her indiscretion, Damon gleefully teases her about being in a shame spiral which she denies, or course. If Elena should be ashamed of anything, it's blaming Damon for her actions. Yes, she was high. But as someone who's been drunk before, I can honestly say everything I've done under the influence was something I wanted to do. It's time for Elena to put on her big girl panties, and own up to her actions. Crying whenever she does something "bad" is not how real women get out of jams.
"If you can't count on him? You just vervained him!"
I was glad Elena didn't buy into Stefan's shenanigans, but hated when she backed down once he planted a wet one on her. Even though I prefer Delena, doesn't mean I hate Stelena, and so with that in mind I have to say I was disappointed she forgave Stefan so easily for going on a killing spree, and hurting her. Many of his unforgivable actions happened when he wasn't compelled by Klaus. Now that she's a vampire, they still aren't addressing these issues. It seems to me that this should be the thing they have difficulty overcoming in their relationship, not just Elena's transformation.
"You say it's complicated, but it's not."
Courtesy of Heart Killer
Besides character growth, "The Killer" also showed what happens when you keep secrets from the people you love. Unnecessary ones at that. If Stefan had just followed his instincts, and told Damon about the cure, his brother could have helped him keep Elena in check. Hell, Stefan could have told everyone, and Elena would not have killed Connor at all.  Even though Elena is clueless to Connor's importance, what she says still rings true. Elena trust Stefan, and once again he proved untrustworthy. Yes it was for a good reason, but this is just one more time that either Stefan or Elena has keep a secret from the other. The funny thing is: Elena is keeping secrets of her own.
"Do you want a cure because she's a vampire, and not cut out to be? Or do you want a cure because she is one?"
"I'll always love here, but she's not cut out to be this person. I don't want her to be."
"Well, if I'm going to to ride this fairy tale to its conclusion, I want to be clear about one thing: I'm fine with her either way, brother. So if I do this, I'm doing it for you."
I always love anything that happens with the Salvatore brothers. Doesn't matter if they're fighting, or teaming up. Even since season 2 I have said that Damon is the one who loves Elena unconditionally. I do believe Stefan loves her, don't get me wrong, but he's in so much denial over what went down with Katherine, that I don't think he can love Elena completely. In this episode, he all but admitted that.

Courtesy of Gypsy Heart Love
What Stefan loves about Elena is her humanity. I think he's afraid that being a vampire will mean she will become like Katherine. He may be right. Stefan keeps saying he never loved Katherine, but it's a lie. Ans what's worse, everyone knows it but him. Why else would he get involved with a woman who looks just like her? In my opinion, Elena represents the woman Stefan thought Katherine was when they first met. Before he learned the ugly truth. Now that Elena is a vampire, the woman he fell in love with is disappearing right before his eyes.

Damon, on the other hand, always loved Katherine. He loved the innocent, naive girl she pretended to be, and the vicious vampire she truly was. When Damon first met Elena she was much like the innocent girl Katherine pretended to be, but over time Damon has seen Elena's fiestiness. He fell in love with her without any preconceived notions about her. Finding out she was Katherine's doppelganger was like a confirmation that Katherine was once like the girl she masqueraded as upon her arrival in Mystic Falls. Before Klaus and his temper changed her.

Out of all this, what I loved the most was how Stefan felt comfortable enough with his brother to admit his true feelings, and that Damon didn't condemn him for them. Even when Damon admitted his own, Stefan didn't get jealous. These men have accepted that they will always be attracted to the same women, and have decided that no matter what, they're relationship will stand the test of time. Neither Katherine, Rebekah, or Elena will tear them apart. Do I think Stefan will be ok with Damon and Elena getting involved? Hell no! But I do think his love for the both of them will will allow him to step aside and let them be happy. Besides, I think he knows that Damon is just as damaged as him, and neither of them are cut out for being in a lasting relationship with anyone. In the end, the only relationship wither of them will have is the one they've forged with each other. Or else they wouldn't be tragic heroes.

The Vampire Diaries Episode (4x04) Recap - "The Five": "It's a High-Stakes, Dangerous Maneuver."

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...

  • Elena and Stefan spent some quality time in the woods.
  • Damon spent time with people not named Stefan or Elena.
  • Team work rocks!
  • Connor "died."
  • Connor was saved by Klaus.
  • Tyler's one month stand showed up on his door step.
  • Klaroline is ready to sail.
  • Elena nearly killed Matt.
  • Damon decided to be Elena's sponsor.
Tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries had everyone spending time with people they normally wouldn't hang around. Damon accompanied Bonnie and Elena to the university so Bonnie could talk to the man who took over Gram's class. This was also a great opportunity for Damon to Obi Wan Elena, and teach her how to feed properly like a real vampire.

"I don't care about the Five, and I don't care about you."
Klaus has Connor detained in the Mikaelson torture room because he's looking for a weapon. Since Damon left Stefan in town to figure out what Klaus was up to when he decided to save Connor's life, Stefan does just that. Of course, this meant we got flashbacks as Klaus told Stefan the story of the Five.

Back in the 12th century, Klaus and his siblings were living in Italy when Rebekah fell in love with a vampire hunter who turned out to be one of the Five. He told her about his tattoo (the one like Connor's), and that it was a map that led to a treasure. That of a cure for vampirism. He also told her the key to deciphering the map was the special sword he carried. Even though the dude revealed all of this, and the fact he had a special dagger that killed a special kind of vampire (Originals), she fell right into his trap. This just shows how tragic Rebekah's love life has always been. As Klaus told Stefan, "She sure knows how to pick 'em."

"You two are friends?"
"Yeah, is it so hard to believe I'd have one?"
"Yeah, actually it is."
A parallel between Rebekah's past and present love life situation was shown with her interactions with Matt. Rebekah has been trying to make things right with him, but trying to make up for nearly killing someone takes time. Or as Rebekah decided, a brand new truck. Matt decided he needed the truck, because he does, but he made it clear that it didn't mean he accepts Rebekah's apology.

When Rebekah wasn't trying to kiss up to Matt, she was spending time with her new friend Amy. That is, until Stefan compelled Amy to forget about it so he could convince Rebekah to help Klaus by telling him the location of the weapon he's looking for. Rebekah didn't want to be bothered, but caved once Stefan promised he'd speak to Matt on her behalf, and smooth things over.

"It's a high-stakes dangerous maneuver."
After visiting professor Shane's lecture, Bonnie grabs an invite to one of the fraternities' Halloween parties. Damon dresses up as Jack the Ripper, while the girls go as his victims. This is fitting since the party is deemed the "Murder House." Since Elena's humanity got in the way of her feeding from a girl Damon helped her pick out, he decides this would be the next best thing. The trio go, and immediately Bonnie makes a bee line for the hot professor.

At first, Elena is hesitant to feed on anyone, but has a change of heart once she spies a frat boy dropping a roofie in an unsuspecting co-ed's drink. She gets her fill, and stops before doing too much damage to the guy. Filled with blood lust, Elena wants more, and Damon makes sure she gets it. On a high, Elena and Damon have the time of their lives, but cool down when things begin to simmer between them. Mostly because Bonnie sees them, and believes Damon is taking advantage of the situation. Feeling guilty, Elena goes along, and Damon is the bad guy once again. I guess the fact he's put himself in an uncomfortable position of trying to help the girl who rejected him like last week (in TVD time) should go unnoticed, because Damon doesn't have any feelings. Whatever!

"Why don't we just name the other hundred people I'd rather be eating dinner with now."

After Stefan gets Rebekah to help Klaus, he learns the truth about the Five. Sadly, the price came with Jeremy's forced assistance. Since Jeremy is the only one who can see the tattoo, Klaus had one of his hybrids grab Jeremy, and bring him to the house so he could sketch the map for him. In the end, we learn that Klaus wants the cure to turn Elena human again so he can continue to make hybrids. Zzzzz... As usual, the stroll down memory lane reminded Klaus how Rebekah has messed up royally in the past, and he ends up staking her. When Connor gets on the loose, and heads straight for the hottie professor, we know our friends are in major trouble indeed.

This episode basically served as a way to break up old alliances while forming new ones. Elena proves to be annoying once again, by not owning up to her own actions, and blaming Damon instead. He didn't force her to feed at the frat party, she went crazy all on her own. The flip side is he could have stopped her from loosing control, but Damon was having too much fun spending time with the woman he's madly in love with. It's not his fault he got caught up in the moment. Klaus' desire to create his own family instead of cherishing the one he was born into will end up being his undoing. Unfortunately, Rebekah continues to be his punching bag, but if his little sister ever gets over her desire to be loved, Klaus better watch out. I'm glad Bonnie has a story line of her own, and can't wait to see what happens between her and the hot (treacherous) professor.

Next week, Connor goes berserk and holds everyone hostage at The Grill. Guns will be drawn, and I'm sure someone will die.

Executive Producer Julie Plec Talks with TV Fanatic "Episode 4 is kind of the beginning of Bonnie’s journey for the season."

TV Fanatic spoke with Executive Producer Julie Plec about what's next in season 4. She gives news that's music to my ears....KATHERINE WILL RETURN. Read the entire article here.

TVF: And her daddy’s coming right?
JP: Her daddy’s coming. We haven’t seen the last of her mama. We’ve got some small romantic roads to travel. We’ve got some great witchcraft stuff that is always lurking. Is she going to tap back into that dark magic or stay on the side of good? There’s all kinds of things coming down the pipeline for her. It’s going to be a good year.

TVF: I’m always up for a Katherine sighting so might we have one in season four? I think she’d love to see where Elena is these days!
JP: All I will say is that we have not seen the last of Lady Katherine.
