The cast of The Vampire Diaries invaded San Diego Saturday, and fans got a treat this year. Not only did the cast do a traditional panel, but Warner Bros. held another at their pavilion, since not everyone would be able to get into the convention center. This year at San Diego Comic Con, I got the opportunity to talk to Ian Somerhalder about Damon's state of mind when The Vampire Diaries returns this October.

Damon has suffered some major loses. First, his best friend dies, and then the woman he loves turns into a vampire. I wondered how Damon would cope with his grief, and if he'd ever be able to let someone else into his heart. Ian replied, "I think it's going to be hard for Damon to let anyone in, because he's at this stage where he's like you people are idiots." Both losses will be hard for Damon, but Elena being born into the world of the undead means she'll still be around. Alaric, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. Ian believes Alaric's death will be the hardest on Damon.
"I think it's not going to be easy for Damon. The loss of a great friend is not easy, and I don't think Damon will be the exception to the rule. They had a full-on bromance, and even though Damon was a complete a$$hole sometimes, this was his only friend in the world."
Damon wasn't the only one affected by Alaric's death. Ian was also, since Alaric's dying signaled Matt Davis' departure from the hit show. "It's really very strange not having Matt Davis on set. We miss him," he says. I personally believe the feeling is mutual. Earlier during the panel, someone sounding very much like Mr. Davis screamed, "I LOVE YOU!" to Ian. Aww... Team Blood n' Beer lives on, even if we don't get to see it on a weekly basis.
Ian also revealed that Damon will be pissed off that Stefan chose to save Matt instead of Elena, stating "When someone is 18, and they want to die, you don't let them." Despite the brothers' differences, Ian believes they will be able to relate to what Elena is going through having been through it themselves. That's a good thing since Ian believes Stefan would be the winner in a Stefan/Damon smack-down. "I think Stefan is one of those closeted freaks who could just rip every limb from your body," Ian replies.
Many fans will have reason to rejoice, because it looks like Damon will be back to his bad boy ways. "In season 1 and 2, he (Damon) has done everything they've wanted him to do, and it didn't work. He's basically saying now, "This is who I am. If you don't like me, then go f*ck yourself." I don't know about you, but I'm glad we won't be seeing a pining Damon this upcoming season. If you've read my recaps, then you already know I'm not a fan of sad-sack Damon. It's good to know he'll have a better sense of self-worth.
For all you Stelena fans, good news! Ian suspects there will be a lot of hot vamp sex between Stefan and Elena now that she's turned. Still, that doesn't mean he's not holding out hope that Elena will give Damon a shot down the road. In fact, he finds it kind of tragic that Damon compelled Elena to forget his selfless act of wishing her well, only to fall in love with her later. Too bad there's no rewind on life. As for Elena's compulsion wearing off, Ian said, "I think it adds a very interesting layer (to the story)."

During the interview, Ian also revealed his fantasy guest star list. First up, Kevin Bacon. Besides being a fan of the veteran actor's work, it seems Ian had Kevin Bacon on his mind as the two have constantly run into each other during the convention. Jokingly, Ian said, "It's like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." Ian would also love to have Clint Eastwood guest star.
The Vampire Diaries returns this October 11th at 8pm, followed by the new series Beauty and the Beast. Matt Davis' new show, Cult, will air mid-season on the CW, and will run for 13 episodes. As for The Vampire Diaries season 3 DVD, that will be released on Tuesday, September 11th.
