"Do Not Go Gentle" - The Vampire Diaries (3x20) Recap

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...
  • Alaric invited Stefan to his Fight Club. Klaus crashed.
  • Esther returned to play Freaky Friday with Rebekah.
  • Caroline and Tyler reunited, and it felt so good.
  • Jeremy discovered he won't be recruited for the MLB. Kol might.
  • Jeremy played Whoopi to Damon's Demi. I guess Rose is Patrick Swayze.
  • Elena showed Damon why she wanted to stay at the No-Tell Motel.
  • Now that Operation: Kill Klaus is a bust, Alaric has teamed up with Estekah for Operation: Kill Originals aka Operation: Vamp Genocide.
  • Damon found his balls.

I don't have any witty remarks for this episode. I tried to think of some, but after three viewings, I still feel hollow. "Do Not Go Gentle" was an important episode, and somewhat controversial. When I watched it on Thursday, I saw lots of angry tweets. I won't lie and say that the episode was perfect. It wasn't. I won't say that there weren't things that I found problematic with the storyline. I did. I won't even say that the episode didn't annoy me. It did that as well. One thing I will say, though, is that it was the perfect showcase for Matt Davis to show everyone what an incredible actor he truly is.

This episode was the annual Decade Dance, and was filled with lots of teen angst. Elena, still reeling from her make-out session with Damon, is trying to help Caroline decorate the gym for the dance. But Caroline isn't letting Elena off that easy. Teasing her BFF about getting it on with Damon, Caroline suggests she ask Stefan to the dance. This actually makes sense.

Courtesy of Dobrevass
Since Elena is supposed to be sorting out her feelings for both brothers, she may as well give both of them a chance. She just spent the night with Damon on a road trip, so why not go with Stefan to the dance to see if there is still some sparkage between them? Elena takes Caroline's advice, and Stefan agrees to go. I love how much this was reminiscent to season one.

Of course when they get to the dance, Elena wants to tell Stefan she mouth attacked his big bro. I give her points for not trying to sweep her actions under the rug, but that seems like something she should've done before she asked him to the dance. Trying to have that type of convo in the middle of the dance floor seems wrong.

Caroline also had romantic troubles this week. When she last saw Tyler he was storming out of her house. This week she decides to stick her nose in everyone else's business to compensate for going stag to the dance. She starts by warning Matt away from Elena. I get it. Elena tends to be the kiss of death to everyone she encounters, and Matt is like her only friend without super powers. Also, I feel this is foreshadowing for the finale. Rumor has it that we'll see Matt & Elena's relationship before the Gilbert's accident on Wickory Bridge, and that things between them weren't all that great. If this is true, it make sense that Caroline would remind Matt to stop looking at Elena with rose-colored glasses.

Courtesy of CandiceTrevinos
Of course Tyler shows up to claim his woman. Seems though he was mad when we last saw him, he isn't letting his girl go without a fight. I love how he tried to keep up the sired charade when Klaus showed up, but wasn't a fan of Caroline shouting about Ty faking it after they all got locked in.

The one person who didn't seem to be having in relationship problems was Bonnie. Jeremy's back on the scene, and I loved how she didn't fall apart when she saw him for the first time since their break-up. I also loved how cool Jaime is about her crazy life. I originally wasn't a fan of the pairing, but now that I've seen it, I can definitely jump on board.

Even though there was a lot of relationship-y stuff going on, it wasn't the main focus of the episode. Alaric was. Damon discovered his bestie hasn't been taking his herbs, and set out to save his buddy from himself. Alaric definitely needed it. After Esther finished using Rebekah to manipulate the Scoobys and Klaus, she returned to her true form, and set out to re-make Alaric. This is where things got fuzzy for me.

I get she was making him into an Original, but I don't get why. She's a witch with seemingly unlimited power, and can create vampires with magic. So why can't she just un-make them with the same magic? Yes, I know she tried that when Abby got vamped, but isn't there another spell she can use now that her kids aren't linked? I mean seriously! This chick doesn't seem to have to live by any supernatural rules, and has been stalking Ric for the last 3 seasons from the other side. I would think turning the OGs human would be a cake walk.

Courtesy of I Lost Track of Things
The majority of the episode the gang tries to free themselves from the school that Esther has magically sealed them inside, while Elena gets kidnapped. Again. Sadly, the Scoobys aren't able to save Alaric, and he decides to die than transform into the ultimate killing machine. I kind of felt that Alaric would get turned by the end of the season, so I wasn't surprised by this. But then Matt Davis got his own series I've been expecting for him to die, and when he did I thought that was that. I hated it, but was willing to accept it. Now that he's an OG, I'm not sure how I feel about it.

When I first thought it would happen, visions of an immortal Dalaric boozing it up, and sexing up sorority houses filled my head like sugar plums. That's all been shot to hell. Now, that Alaric has been turned into a vamp-hating vampire vampire hunter, Team Blood & Beer are kaput ;(

One thing I do like about this, is that we got to see a Damon / Meredith scene. Could this possibly mean she could become his new drinking buddy? We all know how she likes day drinking. A female bestie could be just what the Dr. ordered for our Damon. Especially since the memory of losing Rose is still fresh in his mind.

If Matt Davis is able to come back for season 4, I'm looking forward to seeing him be the villain. He did so well last year as Klaus, and I think he'd make a fantastic foe. Especially given his connections to the gang. I did love all the Klefan goodness, and am more convinced than ever that they hooked up back in the day. Klaus is just too bent on Stefan for them not to have played Hide the Salami a time, or two. I also loved how Damon laid claim to his baby bro, and how busted up Jeremy was over Alaric. I even loved the look he gave Elena that kind of said, "I know what you did at the no-tell motel." And of course, I loved how great everyone looked in their costumes. TVD really knows how to set it out. That was the good.

Courtesy of Drunk Vampires
As for the bad, I'll go with the confusing witch rules this week. Didn't get it, and being a logical person, don't like how contradictory everything seemed. I also didn't like Elena moaning about how she has no one to take care of her now that Ric is dead. I know the world revolves about Elena, but her being a slef-involved twat when I'm grieving the loss of my favorite Bromance? Not cool! I also wasn't a fan of how Stefan manipulated the situation by trying to showcase how stand-up he is.

Don't get me wrong, I love Stefan, but him pulling her into the gym, and reminding her about the "good" times when he tried to kill her was the most self-serving thing I had seemed in a long time. I get the girl has a choice to make between the boys, but that wasn't the time for him to appeal his case. For a guy with so much class, I found Stefan's actions quite tacky.

I still don't know how I feel about the episode. I just hope that the things I didn't quite love are better explained next Thursday, and that maybe once I've seen the whole picture I'll be able to appreciate the episode more. That's my two cents. What's yours?

SPOILERS: Julie Plec Interview Round-Up

If you haven't watched tonight's all-new episode of The Vampire Diaries, then proceed at your own risk!

Tonight's ending was bananas, and lucky for us, Julie Plec had already made the rounds to answer some of our burning questions. Now that the episode has aired on the East Coast, let's take a look at what she had to say about tonight's episode, and what it means for the remaining 2 episodes of season 3.

First up, Julie talked to E! Online, and shed some light on Bonnie's current  state of mind. Plec said, "Bonnie's issue now is "'What the hell? I've got vampires telling me what to do, I've got other people telling me what to do and now I've got my freaking sisters, the witches, telling me what to do. Where's my free will and where's my choice and that's going to impact her character moving forward." (more...)

TV Guide was also at the preview screening, and got the opportunity to learn more about Alaric's new status. Julie said, "He's going to be hardcore, which is equally exciting and devastating because he's one of our heroes who's no longer one of our heroes. [In next week's episode] Alaric goes on a tear and no one is safe. There's going to be a lot of people at one point or another that you're not sure are going to make it to Season 4." (more...)

The Hollywood Reporter also included some of Plec's thoughts on how tonight's events will affect Jeremy in the future.

"Should Jeremy be so lucky to survive season three and be in season four, yeah, it's a big burden on him now, he is the man of the house, proverbially," Plec said. "He and his sister are all that they have. There's going to be a lot that he has to do to grow and keep himself together and be a champion for Elena as she is always trying to be a champion for him." (more...)

There you have it folks! What did you think of tonight's episode? Love it or hate it?

SPOILERS: What will happen with the other triangle?

Last week fans got a taste of some forward movement in The Vampire Diaries' main love triangle. TV/Line reports that we will see some progression in one of the show's other triangles. Click here to read more spoilers about the Originals, and Bonnie. Highlight to reveal!

Question: Can I have a Vampire Diaries spoiler on Caroline and Klaus? —Elizabeth

Ausiello: Our gal is going to be seriously conflicted when it comes a certain Original. “Caroline doesn’t understand what draws her to Klaus [just like] any young woman who is seduced by and charmed by and intrigued by a dangerous man,” says EP Julie Plec. “There’s a lot of things that she can’t really explain about herself and her connection to him.” But there is one thing that she knows for certain. “She’s made her loyalty to Tyler and her love for Tyler very clear and will continue to have to do that.” However, that might not be enough to reassure her hybrid boyfriend, who’s “jealous and pissed off” about her new sorta-relationship with his sire. “[Tyler will] deal with that in the next episode, realizing that, ‘Hey, I sort of brought this on myself by leaving and leaving the opening for this guy to come in and move in on my girl,’” previews Plec. “Unfortunately, there’s still the question remaining: Was he able to effectively break that sire bond, or is he in for a rude awakening? You’ll definitely see that play out over the next couple [of episodes].”

"Apocalypse Now ... ish" - The Vampire Diaries (3x19) Recap

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...
  • Defan included the rest of the Scoobys in on Operation: Kill Klaus part 10.
  • Bex proved to Damon that there was nothing like a woman scorned.
  • The gang discovered how well a plan can go when they work together
  • They also discovered that killing an Original will wipe out half their crew.
  • Matt staked a vamp!
I have so many feelings right now, I don't even know how to express them. It's been so long since TVD has been all-new (not Revenge long, but close), and I almost forgot what happened last time. OK, not really, but you get what I'm saying. Anywho...

Tonight's episode was titled, "Heart of Darkness", and when I first learned that I immediately thought of the Joseph Conrad novel of the same name. I didn't really like it, but am a fan of Apocalypse Now, so I wondered who would be Col. Kurtz. Now I know. Alaric. (If you've never seen Apocalypse Now I am ashamed for you, so just fake the funk.) Back to TVD...

"I'm glad you're here. We need to set up tables, so get moving!"

Courtesy of Candice Trevinos
Tonight's episode was about finding out who sired the Mystic Falls Crew's bloodline so they didn't accidentally kill themselves. While Rebekah has taken over the dance committee and changed it from a 1970's themed dance to a 1920's dance, Caroline is throwing a fake tantrum. All of it is a part of a ploy the gang has cooked up to keep her busy why Caroline has tomb sex with Tyler.

"No matter what I go through to get her back. Fighting my blood lust. Pulling myself back from the edge. None of that matters if she has feeling for someone else."

Courtesy of Vampire Diaries
Stefan wants to be sure Elena's affections only belong to him, so he sent Damon with her to bring Jeremy back home in hopes time alone together would help her figure things out. Yeah, that was incredibly dumb.

Though Jeremy is successful at contacting Rose, the gang still doesn't know which Original sired them since she was sired by Scary Mary Porter. While they wait for Rose to investigate Scary Mary's whereabouts, Elena lies in bed watching a partially dressed Damon drink alone. After he crawls in bed with her, and tries to get cuddly she bolts, only to jump him near the vending machines. Too bad Jeremy caught them dry humping against the wall. At least they found dead Scary Mary at home (after Kol killed her). Seems like Mary got around in her capacity as an Original groupie. Not only did she bang Klaus, Kol, and Elijah, but Kol indicated she might have had a thing with Bex as well. The Scoobys are back to square one.

"So the fate of the whole vampire race depends on you finding a stake?"

In honor of Matt Davis' performance.
AKA Tumblr Gods slacked on Alaric GIF
While Damon and Elena were at the hotel, the motel, and the Holiday Inn, Stefan was babysitting Alaric. And by babysitting I mean getting day drunk, and beating Ric to a pulp. Surprisingly it worked. Personally I attribute it to the alcohol. I can't be the only one who's noticed Ric's change always happens when he's drunk. Which is like 24/7, so I can understand why the connection might have been missed. Carry on!

Basically, Stefan learns it's in the "Vampires aren't welcome" cave, and Stefan, Bex, and Klaus let Alaric go retrieve it. Good plan. For him since Rebekah can't enter the cave making him safe. Or is he? Nope! When a dying Esther returned home to have a heart-to-heart with her baby girl it was to steal her body so she could kill her, and all her children. Mother of the Year, I tell you. Pass the collection plate for the plaque.

So what did we learn?

  • Mothers can't be trusted.
  • Drunks are murderers.
  • Tyler may have broken the bond. He thinks.
  • Don't let your brother take your girlfriend to a motel.

Next week the gang attends another decade dance, and you know what that means? Someone will die. Any guesses who? Check out the short promo below!

SPOILER: Which Man Has Caroline's Heart?

TV/Line has scoop about Caroline Forbes' love life straight from Candice Accola, and Joseph Morgan. In tonight's episode Tyler Lockwood returns from trying to break his sire bond with Klaus, only to find his sire has set his sights on his girl. Accola says:

“He’s not privy to any sort of friendship or emotional connection that Klaus would have towards Caroline. “It’s an inevitable moment in which Tyler and Klaus and Caroline are all going to be in the same room, so it will come to a head, and we will see the repercussions of Caroline and Klaus spending time together.”

Speaking from his character's point of view, Joseph Morgan weighs in:

“She deserves to see more of the world and to witness more of the culture and to make a bigger impact in the world, make bigger waves. Tyler is not the man to do that with her.”

So which man will Vampire Barbie choose? I guess you'll have to tune in to The Vampire Diaries tonight on the CW Network at 8PM EST. Click here to read full article.

SPOILER: Candice Accola Gives Finale Scoop

TV/Line had some new scoop for The Vampire Diaries finale on May 10 straight from Ms. Caroline Forbes herself, Candice Accola. Highlight to reveal!

Sounds like Caroline will be busy trying to figure out a way to save her man Tyler in the May 10 season finale. “They’re still forming their master plan on trying to take down the Originals,” says Candice Accola of the show’s big finish. But given that Tyler is part of Klaus’ blood line and killing the Original hybrid would bring about Tyler’s own demise, “They have be much more strategic about it. That’s the big argument — who’s going to be sacrificed at this point? Everyone’s going to be paired up [with an Original] and we’re going to see who’s willing.” Um, sacrificed? Does that mean we can expect a heartbreaking death? “It doesn’t [necessarily] happen in the finale,” Accola replies, coyly. Holy hell, how many students does Hanson’s classroom hold?!

Julie Plec Talks Finale, Triangles, and Homework

HitFix interviewed executive producer Julie Plec about filming season 3, writing season 4, and Elena's IQ. One thing that's been on everyone's mind is what will happen in the season 3 finale. Julie said, "Certainly if you're thinking it through, you always want your beginning to have led directly to your ending. We try really hard at the beginning of the season, even in the limited amount of time that we have, to make sure that we know exactly where we're going, so that every choice we make is getting us there and that we're not just making up as we go along, which is, by the way, easy to do."

As for Elena, fans have been wondering which brother she will choose - Stefan or Damon? Of course Julie didn't reveal that juicy tidbit, but she did have loads to say about where Elena's head is currently. "She's a girl who has been struggling with her own innocence and growing up and turning 18 and wondering if her parents would be OK with her, with who she is and if they'd be proud of her, in spite of the fact that she's fallen for not one, but two vampires. As she's really reflecting on this kind of dreadful and horrible emotional year that she's had, we take her back to a time when life was just a lot simpler, when her parents were alive and she was a cheerleader dating the quarterback. Everything we've been doing all season with Elena's journey has been leading up to this episode and leading up to this choice that she has to make between these two brothers."

As for Elena's attendance record Julie revealed, "She's actually got an IQ of 140 and she doesn't need to study." I remain skeptical on this one, but that would explain how Elena figured out the cave paintings that revealed Klaus killed Esther. Click here to read the complete interview.

SPOILER: Ian Somerhalder Teases Finale

E! Online spoke to Ian Somerhalder about whether Damon and Elena fans will be crying out of happiness, or sadness come the May 10th finale. Though Ian didn't give too much away he did have something to say about it. Highlight to reveal!

DamonStan: Is there anything to look forward to for Delena fans in the last episodes of the season? #TVD

"I think that Elena is extremely confused, but she's being very honest about it. She's extremely honest about her feelings for Damon and she's extremely honest about her feelings for Stefan. I think that her seeking out the way she feels about either one of them, where her heart ultimately needs to be and how it all works is going to make for some really good story telling. I know that the season finale, the relationship between the two of them, you see how much Damon cares about her."

Gval21: Vampire Diaries—anything on Tyler?

Everyone's favorite hybrid finally returns in episode 19, which will ignite a "jealousy triangle" (executive producer Julie Plec's words!) among Tyler, Caroline and Klaus. But more importantly, fans can update their TVD death watch as we have it on very good authority that Tyler will make it out of this season alive and has big stuff coming up in season four.

Elena's Parents Finally Revealed!

Courtesy of TV Guide

TV Guide released an exclusive photo of Elena's parents, Grayson and Miranda Gilbert (James MacDonald and Erin Beute) from the season finale episode.  As previously stated, her parents will be seen in a flashback that will show what Elena's life used to be like before the tragic accident that killed her parents. Since Elena was also in the accident, we will finally get to see what happened when Stefan rescued her. To prepare for the role, both Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley had to take scuba lessons, and Nina even went so far as to become certified.  The season 3 finale episode airs on May 10, 2012.

"It's something I hopefully will never have to experience in real life — trying to survive underwater while trying to save other people. It was quite intense and a little scary. I'm used to being underwater with a tank, but having to act without the tank is completely different. We were in the water two days for eight hours a day. By the end, I was exhausted and slept like a baby."

The Vampire Diaries Official Episode (3x20) Synopsis - "Do Not Go Gentle"

The CW recently released the synopsis for episode 3x20 titled, "Do Not Go Gentle." As I stated back on March 3, 2012 when Ian Somerhalder tweeted his copy of the script (and revealed episode title), the title may be connected to Dylan Thomas' poem of the same name. If so, be afraid! Be very afraid! Highlight to reveal!

Episode 3x20 Title Revealed!

WHAT THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER — Alaric (Matt Davis) finds an unexpected ally to
guide him on his dangerous new path, while Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Meredith (guest star
Torrey Devitto) try to figure out what their next move should be. At the school’s 1920s Decade
Dance, Bonnie (Kat Graham) asks Jamie (guest star Robert Ri’chard) to go with her and, at
Caroline’s (Candice Accola) suggestion, Elena (Nina Dobrev) asks Stefan (Paul Wesley) to be
her date. Caroline is pleasantly surprised when Tyler (Michael Trevino) shows up at the dance
determined to sweep her off her feet, but Klaus (Joseph Morgan) does his best to come between
them. The dance takes a deadly turn when Damon and Stefan realize they need the help of Matt
(Zach Roerig), Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and especially Bonnie to undo a spell that could
prove devastating for everyone. Josh Butler directed the episode written by Michael Narducci
(#320).
