The Vampire Diaries Episode (4x04) Recap - "The Five": "It's a High-Stakes, Dangerous Maneuver."

Previously on The Vampire Diaries...

  • Elena and Stefan spent some quality time in the woods.
  • Damon spent time with people not named Stefan or Elena.
  • Team work rocks!
  • Connor "died."
  • Connor was saved by Klaus.
  • Tyler's one month stand showed up on his door step.
  • Klaroline is ready to sail.
  • Elena nearly killed Matt.
  • Damon decided to be Elena's sponsor.
Tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries had everyone spending time with people they normally wouldn't hang around. Damon accompanied Bonnie and Elena to the university so Bonnie could talk to the man who took over Gram's class. This was also a great opportunity for Damon to Obi Wan Elena, and teach her how to feed properly like a real vampire.

"I don't care about the Five, and I don't care about you."
Klaus has Connor detained in the Mikaelson torture room because he's looking for a weapon. Since Damon left Stefan in town to figure out what Klaus was up to when he decided to save Connor's life, Stefan does just that. Of course, this meant we got flashbacks as Klaus told Stefan the story of the Five.

Back in the 12th century, Klaus and his siblings were living in Italy when Rebekah fell in love with a vampire hunter who turned out to be one of the Five. He told her about his tattoo (the one like Connor's), and that it was a map that led to a treasure. That of a cure for vampirism. He also told her the key to deciphering the map was the special sword he carried. Even though the dude revealed all of this, and the fact he had a special dagger that killed a special kind of vampire (Originals), she fell right into his trap. This just shows how tragic Rebekah's love life has always been. As Klaus told Stefan, "She sure knows how to pick 'em."

"You two are friends?"
"Yeah, is it so hard to believe I'd have one?"
"Yeah, actually it is."
A parallel between Rebekah's past and present love life situation was shown with her interactions with Matt. Rebekah has been trying to make things right with him, but trying to make up for nearly killing someone takes time. Or as Rebekah decided, a brand new truck. Matt decided he needed the truck, because he does, but he made it clear that it didn't mean he accepts Rebekah's apology.

When Rebekah wasn't trying to kiss up to Matt, she was spending time with her new friend Amy. That is, until Stefan compelled Amy to forget about it so he could convince Rebekah to help Klaus by telling him the location of the weapon he's looking for. Rebekah didn't want to be bothered, but caved once Stefan promised he'd speak to Matt on her behalf, and smooth things over.

"It's a high-stakes dangerous maneuver."
After visiting professor Shane's lecture, Bonnie grabs an invite to one of the fraternities' Halloween parties. Damon dresses up as Jack the Ripper, while the girls go as his victims. This is fitting since the party is deemed the "Murder House." Since Elena's humanity got in the way of her feeding from a girl Damon helped her pick out, he decides this would be the next best thing. The trio go, and immediately Bonnie makes a bee line for the hot professor.

At first, Elena is hesitant to feed on anyone, but has a change of heart once she spies a frat boy dropping a roofie in an unsuspecting co-ed's drink. She gets her fill, and stops before doing too much damage to the guy. Filled with blood lust, Elena wants more, and Damon makes sure she gets it. On a high, Elena and Damon have the time of their lives, but cool down when things begin to simmer between them. Mostly because Bonnie sees them, and believes Damon is taking advantage of the situation. Feeling guilty, Elena goes along, and Damon is the bad guy once again. I guess the fact he's put himself in an uncomfortable position of trying to help the girl who rejected him like last week (in TVD time) should go unnoticed, because Damon doesn't have any feelings. Whatever!

"Why don't we just name the other hundred people I'd rather be eating dinner with now."

After Stefan gets Rebekah to help Klaus, he learns the truth about the Five. Sadly, the price came with Jeremy's forced assistance. Since Jeremy is the only one who can see the tattoo, Klaus had one of his hybrids grab Jeremy, and bring him to the house so he could sketch the map for him. In the end, we learn that Klaus wants the cure to turn Elena human again so he can continue to make hybrids. Zzzzz... As usual, the stroll down memory lane reminded Klaus how Rebekah has messed up royally in the past, and he ends up staking her. When Connor gets on the loose, and heads straight for the hottie professor, we know our friends are in major trouble indeed.

This episode basically served as a way to break up old alliances while forming new ones. Elena proves to be annoying once again, by not owning up to her own actions, and blaming Damon instead. He didn't force her to feed at the frat party, she went crazy all on her own. The flip side is he could have stopped her from loosing control, but Damon was having too much fun spending time with the woman he's madly in love with. It's not his fault he got caught up in the moment. Klaus' desire to create his own family instead of cherishing the one he was born into will end up being his undoing. Unfortunately, Rebekah continues to be his punching bag, but if his little sister ever gets over her desire to be loved, Klaus better watch out. I'm glad Bonnie has a story line of her own, and can't wait to see what happens between her and the hot (treacherous) professor.

Next week, Connor goes berserk and holds everyone hostage at The Grill. Guns will be drawn, and I'm sure someone will die.
