You heard her name last night for the first time, and soon, we’ll be meeting new witch Greta Tucker, who’s described in the casting announcement as being in her 20s, “African-American, cool, hip, smart. A bit of a thrill-seeker.” But Bonnie she is not. Based on the company she will be keeping, I’d say she’s not to be trusted.

IHTVD RECAP by Danielle DuCre': "The House Guest"

School!

Yes, it's been quite sometime since these kids have been eager to do some serious learning. The sun is shining and it's time to get to it. Elena's racing to get ready, but Stefan's begging for 5 more minutes of cuddling.

Ok, kids...five minutes is over.

Downstairs Damon is caught off guard by Elena dashing out the door, that he corners her thinking that she's Katherine. Desperately trying to prove herself, she questions the fact that Katherine is even out of the tomb. Stefan comes down the stairs baffled by the scene-turns right around pins the Elena lookalike upstairs.

But, wait. This Elena is also pleading for recognition. "Stefan, you're hurting me." Sincerely confused, Stefan lets up slightly as he tries to figure out what's going on. Then, Katherine appears, gloating at her impersonating progress.

Some house guest.
"We all want the same thing: Klaus dead."
Elena is understandably upset about Katherine being out of the tomb. She thought her worries were diminishing with Elijah down for the count. Now, the woman after her man is back in the picture-with a secret agenda, no doubt.

After Stefan and Elena leave for school, Damon goes to the cellar to torch Elijah. (Decapitate him already!) Katherine joins him and reminds him that torching Elijah won't finish him. In keeping with honesty, she confesses to knowing Damon would die if he used the stake. Now, pointing the fire torch at Katherine, Damon ponders her fate. "Oh, I would."
"Just make a decision or leave me alone."
At school, Matt is posting fliers about a music event at The Grill. Caroline catches up to him, and he asks her about Tyler's absence. Since Tyler never officially said goodbye to her, it's Matt who confirms that Tyler hit the road. But, it can't be left with that, Matt still wants Caroline to open up to him. Hesitating because the truth is exactly what she wants him to know; but, even if she could tell him, what would she say?

By the lockers, Stefan asks Bonnie to convince the town warlocks to meet with him. Leaving her with that task, Bonnie and Jeremy share a quick, careful kiss before departing for class. Bonnie promises him that she'll talk to Elena about their relationship tonight.

Elena finds Alaric and surprise, surprise they're not talking about overdue papers. "How much longer can she stay in the dark?" Alaric tells Elena that he won't talk to Jenna until she's ready. However, until then their relationship is done. So, will they put her in shock by telling her the scary truth about the demons of the night, or let her suffer over a lost relationship?
"You can trust us."
Bonnie is able to convince the Martins to join her and Stefan at The Grill. Stefan let's them know that Elijah is dead. This is definitely not what Dr. Evil wanted to hear. Elijah was the key to reuniting him with his daughter, Greta.

Going their separate ways, Luka is not satisfied with what he hears. Daddy has a plan to kill though, but not on their hands. "Gonna let Elijah do it."

Whoa! Are they planning to resurrect him?
"I deserve the truth."
Estranged boyfriends. Lethal doppelgängers. Stolen gifts. Yup, definitely calls for a girls' night! At the Gilbert residence, Elena hosts her friends. As they ponder what to do, Jenna joins them ready to share her despair over a relationship folding over perpetual lies. Caroline stops playing devil's advocate, and suggests they go to The Grill for the musical event.

The place is packed. Matt walks by the girls, but doesn't say a word to Caroline when she greets him. Then, Jenna notices Alaric, and heads straight to the bar. Bonnie had it right, "Awkward." Ric attempts to make some conversation with Jenna, but she's preoccupied with her date "Senor Tequila." She's not ready to let his evading slide. Don't talk unless your speaking answers.

Soon, there's a lull as the band prepares to play their next song. Caroline takes this opportunity to live out her rock star fantasy. At least that's what she compels the lead singer to allow her to do. Serenading the crowd, there's only one person in the audience she hopes is getting the message. And Matt got it loud and clear. Jumping up onto the stage, he takes Caroline in his arms, kisses her, and dips her in front of the crowd. Woohoo! Could this be it? Has Matt finally caught a break?
"You're the unwanted house guest, go feed yourself."
Still knee deep in Gilbert journals trying to find answers about the mystic burial grounds, Katherine tells Damon that according to Emily, when a witch dies they leave a significant aura. Therefore, the massacre would be a place so strong and powerful that even an Original could be killed there. (Wonder how strong Grams house would be. RIP Grams.)

As they are talking, they have an unexpected visitor. Upon learning that Elijah was dead, the Martin warlocks went home to perform a spell to send Luka in an invisible state into the Salvatore home. He walks from the front hallway down to the basement in search of Elijah.

Katherine cries hunger, and Damon sends her to find her own snack. Stefan must have been upstairs doing homework because he comes into the parlor curious about Damon's research progress. Damon tells him that he hasn't had success, however discreetly points to the answer in the journal before passing off to Stefan. "Darn."

In the basement, Katherine senses she's not alone. Checking up on Elijah, she realizes she's not. The stake is being lifted from his chest! Her strength overpowers that of Luka, but his dad is telling him to kill her. So, he breaks the wooden chair and shoves a sharp piece through her abdomen. He's just shy of her heart.

Damon rushes in after hearing Katherine's cries, pulls the stake out, and torches the area. Back at the Martin residence, Luka comes out of the trance in flames. He dies in front of his father.

Papa Martin is maaaaaaad.

Taking no time to mourn; only to do a locating spell to find Elena and get revenge. Stefan arrives with an agenda of calming the presumably angry father. Breaking down the door he sees a lifeless Luka on the floor, as well as items belonging to Elena. His pleas are futile and he's instantly affected by an aneurysm spell.

Back at the Salvatore's, Damon brings Katherine blood. Then stabs her for the fact that she knew he'd die. Simple revenge-she'll be fine. She tells him that she had a deal with Isobel and John that for her to be out of the tomb, only one Salvatore could survive. "So you chose Stefan."
"Speaking of happy, would it freak you out if I started dating your brother?"
Elena walks in on Caroline and Matt during some serious necking in the women's bathroom at The Grill. As she turns around to give them some space, she runs into Bonnie who's headed in that direction. Seeing that her best friend is pleasingly shocked, Bonnie drops the I-want-to-date-your-brother bomb. Hesitation from Elena (oh my gosh I can't hold my breath for much longer), and then a blessing by way of a smile.

Taking a phone call, Elena heads toward a quieter location. As she moves away, Bonnie has a clear vision of a determined Dr. Evil. Rampage ensues. Lighting is shattered, bar tops set ablaze. Bonnie attempts to address the situation, but without her powers she's no match for him. Thrown aside, Stefan and Elena attempt to distract him as well. With his focus on Elena, Caroline is able to jump on him giving her friends an opportunity to get out. However, as she goes in to bite his neck, he counters her with an aneurysm spell.

Matt has been among the crowd assuring everyone gets out. As soon as he clears Bonnie from the scene, he notices Caroline down. Racing towards her, Dr. Evil intercepts and takes a broken glass bottle to his neck. (Now, I understand the father's rage, but innocent people are being hurt. Poor Matt! Non c'est bon, Dr. Martin!)

Caroline has no choice but to reveal her secret. She has to heal Matt.
"I'm not a threat to you, Elena."
Matt awakens in Caroline's bed shaken and confused. "I'm a vampire, Matt." Trying to piece information together, Matt thinks Caroline has something to do with Vicki's death. She won't let him run though. She loves him, he loves her, they can work this out- right?

Across town, Jeremy and Bonnie sit at the Gilbert's kitchen table discussing the day's events-Jeremy has no remorse over Luka's tragic fate. Enter Stefan and Elena. "Did you check the house?" Stefan inquires as Elena heads upstairs. Wait. After that question and her confidence-this must be Katherine. Confirmed as she rips out the lurking Dr. Martin's neck. As the others join them, Bonnie is clearly upset. Reaching down to shut his eyes, the fallen warlock reaches up and takes hold of her head, again.

Jeremy's worried about Bonnie, but she shows him she's fine. Dr. Martin's final moment was spent restoring her power. "Jonas wants me to kill Klaus." And he showed her how.

Downstairs Elena is still not pleased to have Katherine around. Katherine returns her necklace to her and assures her that she's not going to cause her harm. Leaving the Gilbert's, Katherine dolls herself up for Damon, but he rejects her. Wow. I believe Damon's immunity, and Katherine's shock!

The Gilberts still have a night ahead of them. Walking Jenna home, Alaric apologizes for having to keep things from her. "Just know that I love you." She says goodnight, not convinced. Heading towards the kitchen, she reaches for the tub of ice cream to numb her distress. Just as Elena joins her, the doorbell rings. "I'm Elena's mother."

Mommy's back.

Candice Accola Talks with MTV Hollywood Crush and L.A. Times Show Tracker “It's been challenging in all the best ways.”

Tonight is the last episode before hiatus and according to Candice Accola, it's a very significant one. She talks with Nuzhat Naoreen from MTV Hollywood Crush and Vlada Gelman from L.A. Times Show Tracker about her relationship with Stefan, Tyler's disappearance, and more.

Read full Hollywood Crush article here.
"So much happens in the episode that comes up for every single storyline," she said. "Some people might not even survive it."

"Caroline’s not necessarily upset about the fact that Tyler’s left. I mean, he was willing to let her go. She sacrificed, she was willing to put her life on the line for him, and he did not reciprocate. You know, she has his back and he didn’t have hers," she told us.

Read full L.A. Times Show Tracker article here.

Yes, it's a very big episode. The teaser that's on the television and Internet gives you nothing. [Laughs] Basically, Thursday's episode will set up the episodes leading up to the finale. Thursday's episode is very significant to understanding and setting the tone for what's to come.

It's definitely time for some honesty around here. "Matt's going to get some answers about everything that's going on around him," Zach says. "I can't tell you what answers, exactly, but some things are going to come to light. Finally."

Will Matt end Season 2 knowing that Caroline is a vampire? "I think that if Matt and Caroline keep going down this road they're on, this more honest, loving relationship, then yeah, he's going to have to find out sometime soon. That's my hope, anyway."

Candice Accola Talks to TV Line About Tyler, Matt and Impending Death "We feel the anticipation just as much as the audience does."

Candice Accola made the interview rounds today. First up is TV Line, she discusses whether or not Matt will ever learn about the secrets in Mystic Falls, Tyler, and the dreaded death that's coming our way. Read full interview here.
TVLINE | Kevin Williamson has revealed that no one is safe going into the end of the season. What are you thoughts on the impending Vampire Diaries death(s)?

Day one of us all getting to Atlanta, we were very plainly told that we’re on a vampire show and characters will be killed off — that’s just the premise. So it’s been in the back of our minds, but it’s hard. There are always going to be more job opportunities, but we’ve been really fortunate with the people we have had the opportunity to work with. Everyone’s just so wonderful to be around so it’d be unfortunate. When you’re part of a series, you become such a close-knit family — it’s been almost two years that we’ve been working together. It’s sad and difficult, but at the same time we know that it’s coming — although we really don’t know who it’s going to be. We feel the anticipation just as much as the audience does.

Question: Got any scoop on The Vampire Diaries? —Ellie

Thursday’s episode is not to be missed. It boasts two deaths, one super-romantic Matt/Caroline scene, and — in the hour’s final minutes — a doozy of a twist.

io9 Chats with Vampire Diaries Writer Andrew Chambliss

Andrew Chambliss, one of the many talented writers on The Vampire Diaries and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse chatted with io9 about working with genre legends, writing for television, and more. Thanks to Heroine_TV for the heads up! Full article here.

Likewise, Kevin Williamson always asks us a similar question when we pitch ideas for Vampire Diaries — "Is this really how the characters would act?" If the answer is no in the given situation, then we're probably trying to make something work because it benefits the story but doesn't stay true to the characters. It becomes a false beat that's not servicing who the characters are.

As different and Joss and Kevin are stylistically, their attention to character is what makes their shows as good as they are, and I think this is why they've both had success in television. At the end of the day, TV is about characters — developing and exploring them over the long haul. That's why people tune in week after week. I'm fortunate that I've been able to work with writers who won't let me forget that.

IHTVD RECAP by Danielle DuCre': "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?"

With the werewolves out of town, the conflicts in Mystic Falls must be at an all time low. Yah right.

"Monsters had beget new monsters."

Elena and Stefan are at the cabin attempting to make a positive experience from their outing. Unfortunately, Stefan is still upset after learning Elena's plans to willingly continue with the sacrifice. Inside, Elena sits and reads from her ancestor John Gilbert's journal, a flashback sequence depicts her findings:

It's 1864-post vampire slaying; Honoria Fell, John Gilbert, and Thomas Fell are sitting at the old Salvatore mansion when strange sounds lurk in the background. (Why are they posted up at the Salvatore home?) Still plagued by anxiety of the vampire presence, the men decide to go outside and check it out. With the help of the Gilbert compass, they realize that, indeed, there is a vampire in their company. Hello, Mr. Stefan Salvatore.

The ruthless killing leaves Elena shocked about Stefan's ramped past. Aware of her discomfort and curiosity, Stefan continues the history lesson. "I want you to know the truth, but I want you to hear it from me." The flashback sequence continues from Stefan's point of view:

Stefan is a mess. Bodies drained of blood lay strewn around the parlor. And women compelled to enjoy the anxiety awaiting their fate. "Who wants to die next?" Damon enters and compels the surviving women to leave. He saved the girls and Stefan from that dooming fate.

Stefan admits to Elena that that was a time he was full of great guilt. He was violently trying to avoid the past. Admittedly worse than present day Damon.

"Gotta run. I have a murder to plan."

Jenna escorts Elijah along the property lines- as needed for his research. Alaric shows up, on invite by Jenna, and is quick to show protection over her. "I don't really pursue younger women."

At The Grill, Jeremy joins Bonnie hoping to talk about their kiss. Bonnie, however, is preoccupied with the spell she performed over Luka. Just then Luka walks in visibly perturbed- I'm thinking he's interested in discussing the spell, too. As he assertively confronts Bonnie, Jeremy decides he doesn't like Luka's tone so tells him to back off.

On the other side of The Grill, Alaric has joined Damon and Andie. Again, Alaric is simply not comfortable when Elijah is in sight. (Dear Elijah, there is the respect you were looking for.) Alaric you run from EVERYTHING!

The charmed Andie Star suggests a dinner party so that Elijah can further discuss his work. Pleased with his minion's idea, Damon offers to host.
"That blood almost did the trick; you're almost pretty again."
Damon awakens a seemingly mummified Katherine with a bottle of blood, and some new clothes. That's sweet. Now why are you there?

Answers of course. Katherine doesn't let on that Uncle John stopped by, but she does confirm that John shared the correct method to kill an Original. "Guess who's coming to dinner?"

Back at the Broodinghouse, Jenna and Andie have set up a very fancy dinner table. Jenna admits that she may be in love with Alaric, but can't commit because of his incessant evading. Upstairs, Ric confronts Damon on his motives hosting this dinner party. Well, Ric, Damon's doing a little evading of the facts, too. He's not tellin'!

Doorbell. Oh joy. Uncle John.

Jenna has it right on the money questioning who decided to invite this joker. Answer: He took it upon himself to make an appearance. Empty handed to say the least! No time to further discuss because Elijah has arrived. However, before he steps through the threshold he warns Damon that if anyone crosses him, he breaks his deal with Elena and they all die. "Jenna!"

Taking their places for dinner, Elijah begins to explain the significance of his research in Mystic Falls. He shares that in the 1690s Salem witches took refuge in Mystic Falls. The mention of witches causes his audience to chuckle, "Ghost story," but Damon presses on. "Why do you want to know the location?" Historian's curiosity, or sacrifice set up?

Well, if Damon's execution plan is successful, Elijah won't be around for either reason to be of importance. Gee, I sure hope Damon succeeds because I have a bad feeling about this...
"Hunt. Prey. Kill."
Flashback. Stefan is at a war camp where the wounded are being treated. As he feeds off the helpless, a figure catches his attention. He decides to sneak-attack, but they prey anticipates his move and pins him to the ground. Lexi!!!

Stefan proceeds to tell Elena about his friendship with Lexi; meanwhile, Elena finds pertinent information in the journals. The picture of the weapon to kill and Original is there, however, it comes with a couple disclaimers.

Disclaimer #1: The ash dipped stake must be used by a human. A vampire attempting to use it will, in turn, be destroyed.

Basically, Uncle John is setting Damon up. Ooooh, I knew this was gonna be bad.

Stefan attempts to contact Damon, but he's too busy trying to distract Elijah with liquor! Fortunately, Alaric is welcoming excuses that allow him to avoid telling Jenna the truth, and is able to answer the call. "The dagger will kill you if you use it."

Phew!

They congregate around the table waiting for Jenna's return with the dessert. Damon is definitely ready to get rid of Uncle John. So much that he blatantly expresses to Elijah that Elena has no desire for him to survive, therefore he no longer needs to be covered in the agreement. The banter between Damon and Uncle John annoys Elijah. "If you become a liability I will take her away from you and you will never see her again."

OMG! Alaric just drove that dagger straight through Elijah's back! He just killed an Original! What does he have to say about that? "Now get rid of him before Jenna comes back with dessert." Whoa!

Quickly, they take him down to the holding cell in the basement. Oh dear. That's it? Damon, you should know better- can you at least decapitate him or something. You know, just to be sure.

Back at the cabin, Stefan continues to explain to Elena the affect Lexi had on him. "Love, Stefan, that's the point." Lexi taught Stefan how to persevere rather than give up and forget about his humanity. This is realization that he wants for Elena- don't give up. (A little on the side of after school special, but good message nonetheless.)

"Elijah's dead." Will Elena reconsider her fight now that Elijah's out of the picture? Well, that decision will have to wait.

Disclaimer #2: The dagger must remain in place. WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE!

A pissed off Elijah arrives at Dr. Martin's and demands a locating spell to find Elena. This should be interesting.

"Little tip: Don't pull the dagger out."
At the Gilbert residence, Jeremy has created a pretty plush ambiance for Bonnie's visit. She tells him that she can't start any type of relationship with him until she has Elena's blessing. But, she does admit she liked the kiss.

Agreeing to give her time, Jeremy suggests they begin the spells. As Bonnie works on capturing the energy of the element of fire, he further suggests that she try using him- as the human body's largest element is water. Smooth move, Gilbert. Their embrace is close, and very intense. Then, Dr. Evil (aka Martin) barges through the door pinning Jeremy to the wall, and seizing Bonnie's head in his hands. He demands she reveal her intel on he and Elijah. Once she complies he does what no witch could ever bear. "He took my powers."

There should be repercussions for that, just as there is if a vampire uses the weapon against an Original.

Elijah's at the cabin- collecting rocks. Against Stefan's protests, Elena confronts him- through the open doorway that the rocks just created. Trying to renegotiate her deal, Elijah refuses to comply. And, he doesn't believe her when she says she'll kill herself, or become a vampire- like Katherine- making the sacrifice void. He's waiting for proof. So, she stabs herself.

Now he believes. Quickly giving her his word on restoring their agreement, he tells her to let him heal her. Fumbling toward him, she musters up enough strength to drive an ash tipped dagger through his ancient heart. It was the first, and most significant, kill of her life- and I really can't believe Stefan allowed her to do that.
"It will get the best of you."
Back at the Gilbert's residence, Jenna is ready for Ric to give her some answers. But, he can't. Rather, he won't. He's not ready to disclose that his ex-wife, the mother of his girlfriend's niece, is a vampire. As a result, Jenna can't continue with their relationship. Uncle John is standing in the doorway with a satisfied smirk. Ric who is now emotionally deflated, hands over the ring and warns John that he'll now deal with Damon.

And, once again, Elijah is taken to the basement cell. This time Elena's setting the terms of condition. She'll comply as long as Damon and Stefan stop keeping things from her.

Inquiring with Stefan about what got into her, he's forced to recall his own lesson from Lexi when she told him to release the hate. Is, is that remorse Damon? He, then, heads upstairs to find Katherine in his shower. She knew all along that the compulsion would wear off if Elijah died. Still, she said she will stay to help protect Elena. (Hmm, who wants to guess what Katherine, John, and Isobel are planning?) "So, how 'bout that robe?"

Sara Canning Talks with Zap2It and People Magazine (Video)+ Live Tweet Interview with Seventeen Magazine

Sara Canning talked with Carina MacKenzie (@cadlymack) about Uncle John, the dinner party, and a possible love triangle with Elijah. Check out full story here.

Is Alaric jealous of Jenna's interaction with Elijah in terms of their romantic relationship, or is he just solely concerned for Jenna's well-being, since Elijah is obviously bad news?

You can read Alaric's feelings either way. Alaric's not really aware of the thoughts that are going on in Jenna's head. What John says about Alaric not being trustworthy immediately calls up Jenna's past and guys who have lied to her before. She's right back there again. As humans, we have defense mechanisms, and we'll see her treat him differently because she doesn't know what to believe. He could definitely read her helping Elijah out with his "historical writing project" as something more.

Sara talks with People Magazine about what supernatural character she relates to the most. Watch Video on People's Site.

Assignment X Interviews Candice Accola "She’s got a cheat-sheet in the form of Damon and Stefan. "

Assignment X talks with Candice Accola about being turned into a vamp, relationship with Sheriff Forbes, vampire mentoring, and more. Read full interview here.

AX: One of the principal sources of humor and humanity in the show is Caroline’s struggle with being a vampire and fighting with her collision of appetite and ethics. How does that work for you as a performer?

ACCOLA: Basically, babies are cute because they’re just figuring things out for the first time and everything is brand-new. I mean, those are the best times in your own personal life, when something’s the first time, so I think that’s been a wonderful thing that the writers have done was to create a character that is going through the transition wholly where you get to see it all for the first time, so yeah, it is very, very fun to play, and personally, I don’t think I would have caught on as quickly as Caroline does. She’s caught on very quickly.

TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly Talk with Dawn Olivieri

The always lovely Robyn Ross from TV Guide spoke with Dawn Olivieri about Andie Star's relationship with Damon and more. Check out full story here.

Will Andie be disposable to Damon when he's done using her?

Olivieri:
Damon thinks that he's just using her, but Andie is smarter than the girls you've seen him fall [for]. Andie is a worthy opponent not in physicality, but in the mind. What's going to be interesting is when Andie comes to from her comatose state. She's a news reporter so she's not going to be a victim of a crime and let things happen. The unfortunate thing for Andie is she's going to want to get to the bottom of it.

Entertainment Weekly's Mandi Bierly chatted with Dawn about her role on the show, new pilot and more. Read full article here.

“It’s a funny situation because you have this new character that comes out of nowhere, and now all the sudden she’s best friends with Jenna, and everyone knows her, and she’s taken a seat at the queen’s table. It’s shocking everyone, especially all the fans who already have their couples picked out. Here’s a new one. I’ve heard it termed the ‘Dandie.’”

The TV Chick Talks with Steven R. McQueen about Bonnie Kiss, Uncle John and More!

The TV Chick spoke with Steven R. McQueen about last week's kiss with Bonnie, getting more involved with Uncle John and more. Read full article here.

Is Jeremy going to get more involved with John Gilbert?

Well, the relationship with John Gilbert is as complicated as they come. He’s got one side of his heart and mind fighting another side. One side is so curious about his family legacy that he’s only recently figured out about, and his father, which there’s a whole other side to him which he didn’t even know about. And Uncle John seems to know about this so Jeremy wants to ask him more than anything “What’s going on? What’s happening?” But another side of him is so hurt. Uncle John has had good intentions in his mind. [But] he’s hurt a lot of people that I love. He’s killed one of the girls that I loved. I think at this point, Jeremy has got a layer of hurt going on. Even though he’s callous now, through everything he’s been through, so he doesn’t quite show it as much but he’s hurt to the point that he’s not willing to mend his relationship with him.

"The House Guest"- Elena or Katherine? Nina gives the scoop

Has John Gilbert made good on his promise to Katherine? Is she the new Salvatore house guest?

In a recent article by Zap2it's Carina MacKenzie, Nina Dobrev shared:
"She's plotting her way out. She's a woman who likes to be in control and when she's not, she's not happy."
As the article suggests, episode stills show the doppelgänger appearance in full effect. Straight hair, casual clothing would make us assume Elena. But, she's not wearing a necklace, and she's sipping on Damon's favorite alcoholic drink. Katherine?

Be sure to tune in February 24, 2011 to the CW 8/7c for "The House Guest" revelations!

Catch up on the full interview with Nina Dobrev here.

IHTVD Recap by Danielle DuCre: "Crying Wolf"

Out in the woods, Jules and Brady are placing their slain friends over the bon fire. Such a noble burial.

Stevie, one of the surviving lycanthropes, comes to the realization of Mason's involvement with Katherine. "I should've known better." Explaining his epiphany to Jules and Brady, they formulate their mission to take control of the moonstone. And, use it to exercise the sacrifice so that they may control their transformations and keep the vampires restricted to the night.

Tyler arrives and the pack fills him in on his opportunity to be free from his curse- or, at least control it. Of course they hold out the part about sacrificing his childhood friend. No big deal.

I understand his want to be free from this, but Tyler made me upset last week. Let's see if he redeems himself tonight.

"Where would you like to go?"
At the Forbes' residence, the three girl friends are bundled together in Caroline's bed. They must've had a successful slumber party cheering up Caroline because the only thing disturbing them this morning is Elena's phone ringing.

As she topples out of bed, she finds that it's Stefan calling to bid her a good morning. Elena doesn't want to go home where Uncle John is lurking so she and Stefan make plans to go to the Gilbert family's lakehouse.
"I'm an Original. Show a little respect."
Meanwhile, Damon is saying goodbye to an alive and well Andie. The newscaster is compelled to believe that she's falling in love with Damon. I'm guessing this isn't too far from the Damon swooning she was doing last episode.

Alaric is at the front door as Andie leaves. He and Damon are preparing to go to Jenna's event where she's hosting a certain Elijah Smith. Great cover- very, original.

Of course it wouldn't be a party without Uncle John! His motives since he's been back have him working his menacing ways back to the top. He's ringless, so what more can he do but make sure all eyes are off of him while he plays out his plan. So far, he's got Jenna focused on the new information that her boyfriend's ex-wife's former partner is her niece's biological father. And, now he's threatening to rat out Alaric by informing Jenna that he's known about the relation, and so much more, this whole time! (I kinda wish he would. Just so Alaric can be present for something again. I want him to be accountable for his actions! Ok, I'm done.)

Damon is engaging in on his own confrontation-with Elijah. Mr. Smith, however, doesn't need to be bothered. He quickly shows Damon that he is no match for an Original. Damon's commentary ceases as his vocal cords are disabled by a No. 2 pencil being shoved into the side of his neck. Elijah may have done that as payback for attempting to kill him, or perhaps it was just a lesson on staying out of his way.
"Stop lying!"
Caroline and Bonnie head to The Grill for some breakfast. Matt blows off Caroline when he sees them sitting at the table. Bonnie notices, but Caroline is having difficulty explaining what's going on. She tries to talk to him, but Matt is still upset about her lying to him and he confronts her about it. Walking away from her, she runs into Tyler. As she tries to avoid him, he grabs her bag forcing its contents to spill to the ground. As they gather the fallen items, Tyler swipes her cell phone and pockets it! (So far, not redeeming himself.) He uses it to send an anonymous text to Elena confirming her whereabouts. The lakehouse.

Shortly after Matt comes over and shares a few words with his pal. He doesn't care if they are into each other, he is just tired of the lies. (Go Matt!)
"I'd rather just be here, now."
Arriving at the lakehouse, Elena is slightly hesitant to plunge right into their getaway. It's the first time she's been back since her parents passed. After taking a few moments to reminisce and collect herself she and Stefan head inside. Well, almost.

Stefan can't get inside because he hasn't been invited. Although the original owners have passed, the title of the property has been transferred and according to Elena, Uncle John is the owner. (Oh great! Just what we need when a pack of wolves are on their way!) But, then, with a grand invitation she extends an invitation to Stefan. Don't worry, Stefan, she had us all fooled!

Settling in, they make their way out to the dock. Elena is recalling moments with her family which spark a conversation about their future. Deciding that they'd rekindle that conversation later, they head inside to partake in a home cooked meal by Stefan, and some underage drinking by Elena.
"What kind of witch roofie was that?"
Bonnie and Caroline are still at The Grill. Jeremy arrives to help in their plan to capture Luka and get to the bottom of Elijah's presence in Mystic Falls. Bonnie offers the warlock a beverage, puts on a little charm (which Jeremy is quick to dismiss), and he's out like a light.

They take him back home and lay him on the floor surrounded by candles. In preparation, Jeremy is instructed to bring a bowl of water. Caroline uses this time to let Bonnie know about Jeremy's obvious crush. "We're not in any position to judge." Now, Bonnie begins to perform a seance-like spell forcing Luka to tell the truth. He tries to fight it, but Bonnie gets it out of him. "Klaus." He and his father are working with Elijah to take down Klaus. Apparently, Luka's sister is being held by Klaus, and Elijah has promised to free her in return for their warlock services.

But, that's not all. None of this can be attained without the death of the doppelgänger. "Elena has to die."
"You up for this?"
After the event, Damon and Alaric head back to the Broodinghouse for some bonding time before he meets Jenna. One drink down, Alaric heads out but is caught in a scuffle. Damon turns the corner as Alaric drops to the ground with a knife protruding from his stomach. The wolfpack is here.

Damon is chained to a chair, and bound by a wooden spiked collar. The wolfpack wants to know the whereabouts of the moonstone. Oh, the irony of this torture.

At the lakehouse, Elena and Stefan prepare to gather more firewood for the evening. Entering into her parents room to get a coat for Stefan, she pauses to smell her mother's perfume. Then, tosses Stefan her great-grandfather's flannel. Soon, their intimacy takes them to the wall which Stefan realizes is hollow. Breaking the lock on the hidden door, a hiding place filled with lots, and lots, of weapons and trinkets from 1864. Giving Elena a moment to go through her family history, Stefan leaves to get the firewood. As usual, he is not paying attention. (This happens to you every week, Stefan!) Brad has recruited Tyler, and they sneak up on Stefan and put a bullet in his chest. Tyler is ordered to kill Stefan if he moves; Brad's on a mission to get Elena.

Curious as to what's taking Stefan so long, Elena goes in search for him. The door is wide open so she arms herself with a sharp object. Jumping out at her, she stabs Brady. Good job, Elena! I love her fight! She distracts him, then goes into the hidden room. His heightened wolf senses lead him straight there, but she's prepared. She drives a wooden object into his back-probably thinking he is a vampire-disabling him and giving her a chance to escape from the house. As he follows her, Stefan stops him by pulling the ultimate Damon maneuver and ripping out his heart.

Turns out Tyler had a change of heart once he learned that the pack's plan was to kill Elena. Ok, redeemed.
"That's not heroic, that's tragic."
Elijah to the rescue, again. Damon's enemies are expired one by one, with the exception of Jules who leaves at the sight of the Original (similar to Rose's exodus). “You realize this is the third time I’ve saved your life now.”

On the other side of town, Caroline is taking a drowsy Luka back home leaving Bonnie and Jeremy alone. Oh, no. I can see it coming. But, I haven't decided if I'm for this relationship now that Jeremy's matured by milestones. Well, there's no need to deliberate. Once Bonnie mentions that Jeremy is "hot," it's on. They share an extremely passionate kiss. "Wow."

Stefan and Elena are coping with the events of their getaway at the lakehouse. Stefan tells Elena that the promise she made to Elijah is futile because he is going to kill her anyways. However, this isn't news to her. While her friends have been trying to discover the truth, Elena has known all along that eventually her life will be sacrificed. This doesn't please Stefan at all. He questions her martyrdom, then abruptly pushes past her in disappointment.

"No more lies."
Tyler is in desperate need to cope with his new attribute. He leaves a farewell note for his mother, gives advice to Matt, and considers paying his dues to Caroline. After the grand loss that the lycanthrope clan suffered today, Tyler really needs some answers. So, he agrees to runaway with Jules. They pack up in her Jeep and drive off into the night.

An OMG farewell of a character so brilliantly executed by Michael Trevino.

IHTVD RECAP by Danielle DuCré: "Daddy Issues"

"We can't go there, Tyler."
This morning, Tyler greets Caroline as she's leaving home. The kiss they shared in last week's episode was intense, but Caroline expresses that their relationship can not go further than friendship. Tyler's not protesting because he's not here for the lovey-dovey. He wants answers.

"What happened to my Uncle Mason?" Tyler knows that Caroline isn't the only vampire in town, and that Damon and Stefan may have been behind his uncle's disappearance. "You lied to me!" Uh oh, wolf rage!
With that opening, it surely will be just a regular day in Mystic Falls.

Over at the Salvatore house, the scene is a little steamier: Damon. Shower.

Pause for reflection.

And, the Gilbert residence is no exception to heat. "Why are you here?" Uncle John is wanting to make a fresh start with his daughter, but Elena is not interested. So, to prove his serious efforts in reestablishing his presence he tells Jenna that he is Elena's biological father. More like drops a bomb on her.

Alaric is such a coward. The moment he sees Uncle John he makes an excuse to leave. So, Jenna hears this news and is left to cope with her shock alongside Elena who's biggest reaction is an apology for not telling her sooner.

"We're not that desperate, Stefan."

Damon knows that it's imperative to protect Elena, but calling John Gilbert was the last option. So much the last option that it wasn't really an option at all. Stefan explains that John knows how to protect Elena from Elijah, and figures the extra help is needed due to Damon's current instability. "You cared about her after five minutes." Losing Rose hit Damon hard, but he's ready to get the superhero haircut and move on.

At the Lockwood mansion, Tyler is visited by Jules. She wants Tyler to leave the vampire infested city of Mystic Falls to join her pack. "It's my duty and honor to help you."

Shortly after Jules leaves, Tyler has another visitor. Stefan. Only his bargain is to convince Tyler to stay in Mystic Falls, and keep their mythodical existence under the radar. He expresses that they can coexist because first and foremost they're friends.

All of this knowledge of werewolves and their vampire enemies has made Tyler unsure of his loyalty. Does he trust his vampire friends who have been lying to him, and may be the reason for his uncle's disappearance? Or, does he trust the new werewolf in town who promises to assist him through this new chapter of his life?

"Yah, but stupid's so much more fun."

As new mayor of Mystic Falls, Carol Lockwood is leading a city wide memorial for all of the community members recently lost. (How big is this town?) After giving a speech, she tells Uncle John that Damon is the head of the Council now. He doesn't seem too surprised that the vampire hunting council is, in fact, in the hands of a vampire. He's also not surprised that Jeremy won't be bothered. After learning about his uncle's involvement, Jeremy wants nothing to do with Uncle John and even tries returning the charmed ring as a farewell incentive. Of course this doesn't work, so Jeremy makes the effort to leave, and does so with a cold shoulder.

Besides, Jeremy has more important things to do. Like save Bonnie from Dr. Evil, err Martin. The good doctor is trying to win Bonnie over even though both he and his son did wrong by her. He reassures her that Elijah's promise is valid- she and her friends will be protected. The interruption by Jeremy's arrival ceases their discussion and the two friends head towards The Grill.

Inside, Jenna and Alaric are discussing the random facts of their lineage. Talk about six degrees of separation! Because Jenna's been in the dark for so long, this is all a whirlwind of information for her. Still, Alaric can't be straight with her. After all, he's had this knowledge for some time now.

Damon and Elena also arrive at The Grill with the mission of getting answers from Uncle John. Damon attempts to play a buddying role to coax answers out of him, but John wants to know if he can trust the Salvatores before he confides in them. The old Damon would have beat ringless Uncle John for not giving him answers, but instead implies a quiet strength by sharing his consumption of vervain. "It's an acquired taste."
"I'm not afraid of a vampire."

In the parking lot, Matt finds Caroline heading home after the memorial. They set a date to catch up after his shift at The Grill. Once he's gone, Jules approaches Caroline asking if she's seen Tyler. We haven't seen Caroline kill outside of her transition stage, but she turns on Jules bearing fangs. Unfortunately, Jules came prepared-with vervain. And that's not all, a boyfriend, Brady, who's in town to avenge Mason's death. Caroline is blinded by the vervain, and knocked unconscious by a wooden bullet. Point blank. (Geez, rude.)

They take her to Brady's trailer in the woods. Nicely decorated with an inescapable metal cage. Poor Caroline wakes up, pulls the bullet out, and attempts to free herself. But she's caught off guard when she sees a figure in the corner. "I see you got the bullet out. That was...nasty." (And so is your attitude!)

At the Lockwood mansion, Stefan is still trying to convince Tyler that they can live as they were and be friends. He even tells Tyler to give Caroline some slack. "She's your friend, stop being a dick to her." Stefan's goal was to come back and build a life in Mystic Falls, but with vengeful werewolves running around a positive outcome is skeptical. A call from Jules, however, sets things in motion. Using Caroline's phone, she pressures Stefan to release Tyler, or Caroline dies.

Oh, poor Car.

Back at The Grill, Damon is approached by a newscaster. "Can I buy you a drink?" Really lady?

During Damon's explanation as to why it is best for everyone that he be left alone, Elena receives a call from Stefan concerning Caroline's capture. Damon is ready to kill Tyler over this, and in his current state I wouldn't put the possibility past him. "It's a win win." Elena tries to convince Damon of his other options. But he's ready to go. Uncle John approaches concerned, but takes Damon's queue and guards Elena from following.

Uncle John resumes to question Elena over her interest in working with Elijah. The situation distresses him as a member of her family. "That word is off limits to you." And, according to Elena, so is the use or any claim of the fact that she is his daughter. She didn't trust him before, and she certainly doesn't trust him now.

"Get it out of your system?"

Caroline has been tortured all day by Brady. Vervain, spikes, wooden bullets. But the torture is over. Salvatore brothers to the rescue.

Leading Tyler into the woods, Stefan commands Jules to release Caroline and leave town. His version is too calm, because Damon interjects with a more forceful threat. "My way which is a little bloodier...we will take you!" Jules still appears to have a hard front- what does she have up her sleeve? A ha! A wolfpack ready for battle.

Stefan releases Tyler, Damon admits to killing Mason, and the battle is on! As Damon darts towards Jules, she backflips off of the trailer and out of the way. A man jumps down from trailer attempting to take down Damon, but he's unsuccessful as he loses his heart in the process. Classic Damon manuever!

Stefan in also holding his own in the battle, until he gets careless and is staked in the back. Shouldn't his acute vampire hearing pick up the attackers footsteps? Pay attention! Shortly after, Damon, too, is taken down by a wooden bullet executed by Jules's hand.

This can't be good.

Meanwhile, Tyler finds Caroline locked up. He hesitates too long for comfort before releasing her from this doom. (He's really making me mad with his indecisiveness. Help her already!) As she is coming out from the trailer, wounded and weak, she is blindsided. Jules has her pressed to the trailer's side with a gun to her back. Desperately staring at her friend for help, Tyler just stands there. Grrr!

Suddenly all werewolves drop, with the exeption of Tyler. It's Dr. Martin there to see that Elijah's promise is upheld. Tyler maintains his stunned, not in control demeanor and is speechless. "When your friends awaken, they need to get the hell out of this town."

"You don't have to pretend with me."

After Elijah told Stefan, Damon, and Caroline to leave the woods. Damon heads to the Broodinghouse while Stefan walks Caroline home. Shaken up after her torture, at the end of the day this young vampire is a girl who went through a tramadic experience. "I can handle myself." Making her way to her vanity. Caroline assesses the damage. As she pulls the spikes from her neck, she gets a phone call. Matt "Can't Catch A Break" Donovan. Due to her detainment, she forgot that they had a meeting scheduled after his shift. (Shoot, I forgot, too.) Caroline tells her that something came up with Bonnie and that she'd like to reschedule. Being the kind, easy-going guy that he is, Matt agrees to rescheduling as he stares at Bonnie cuddled up with Jeremy.

To make matters worse. Tyler makes a house call. He's concerned, but also confused about the entire situation. "You help your friends, that's what you do." Caroline lets him have it. And deservedly so. He may have been confused, but to watch his friend go through such torture, and just stand there...non c'est bon. "You get the hell out of my house!"

He does so, and heads back to the woods. Tyler tells Brady and Jules about the moonstone. They seem pretty concerned about it, and are most likely going to go against Dr. Martin's demands of leaving town to find it.

"I brought some backup."

Elena's home; startled by Uncle John's sudden appearance. He gives her a bracelet that belonged to Elena's mother, Miranda; and vows to protect Elena and her family. "Get in line." Stefan is there to catch Elena's tears, but he needs her to do him a favor.

Stefan returns to the Forbes' residence to check on Caroline. She may not want to confide in him at the moment, but girlfriends are always down for venting. So, he reveals Elena and Bonnie who are there to console Caroline after her horrendous experience. (We love Stefan.) In a silent conversation, Elena and Stefan share three important words:

Elena, "I love you."

Stefan, "I love you."

And, I love this show!

"I come bearing gifts."

Uncle John makes a visit to the Broodinghouse. Apparently he's mustered enough trust to work with Damon. Unveiling the essentials to kill an Original, "Where Elena's concerned, you and I are on the same side." He shares that it was Isobel's strong research skills that discovered this strategy. Although he won't say where she is, he does mention that she has a plan.

Too much "Elena" talk for Damon to bear, so he calls the news reporter, Andie. In a bubble bath, sipping on wine he confesses to Andie what's been bothering him. "I'm in love with a woman I can never have." Of course it's not because his calmer, more civil brother is dating her. Yah right. "I'm not in control."

Damon proceeds to tell her that he kills people....awkward. However, because he needs someone to talk to, he compells her to remain calm. Then, continues to explain that Elena wants him to be the better man, and it's just not in his nature to do so. In return, Andie suggests that maybe this is who he is now. Unable to whole heartedly accept that possibility, he seeks a distraction. So he bites her.

On the other side of town, Uncle John pays a visit to Katherine. She wasn't expecting him, but she'll make her demands nonetheless. She wants out of the tomb. "I'm already on it."

Oh dear.
